Couple of great areas, there's Elk Grove (very populated with cops), there's North Natomas which is a good area as well. There's Roseville, Citrus heights. Those are all great places that are low key and family oriented.
Sacramento economy isn't horrible. Finding a job is possible, but it depends on what you're trying to find a job as.

I would agree with Steve for the most part. I'm not sure how much you know about the greater Sacramento area or what region of the US you are coming from.
I'd say the prospects of finding a job out here aren't the best in the state but probably a lot better than finding a job in the Central Valley or say places out of state, Detroit or Las Vegas. Sacramento has a lot of State and Federal offices here which I believe are a pretty significant part of economy in this area. Since the State is broke and not spending much, I'd say that has put a big damper on the local economy. Sac was also hit pretty good with the housing bubble. The cities Bay Area has rebounded a lot faster than the Sacramento area.
I would presume you are looking at staying in the automotive industry from your description(?) There's some decent size 'automalls' in the surrounding cities like Roseville, Folsom, and others you may be able to find employment. There's more specialty shops dotted throughout. I don't work in automotive, so I couldn't really tell you how good the prospects for getting hired.
Like Steve said, it really depends on what field of work you are in search of.
If you are in the area, maybe come down to one of our monthly meets I'm sure there would be a lot of people happy to give your their more candid opinions.

Dito Oak Park... I'd also steer clear of parts of North Higlands, South Sac, and Del Paso Heights. I mean ya gotta go and see how it feels but not the best of areas. If you like smaller homes with a mid town vibe Tahoe Park and East Sac are really cool.

I would look into Folsom. Its one of the few places I feel safe parking my S outside overnight at my apartment.
Otherwise I would HIGHLY recommend getting an apt with a garage option.
Moving to SAC? Most people are looking to get the heck out of CA. I would have chosen Charlotte or Raleigh NC personally.
Economy is booming, great people and very inexpensive to live. And not far from the Dragon!
