New/Wannabe Photogs, need help?

sup guys,
i am noticing a lot of guys on here looking to pick up a digi SLR.
i know that the jump from point and shoots to slr is tricky.
so, i am throwing this out there to see if anyone is interested.

if we can get a nice group together of people looking to learn the basics and some more advanced techniques, i would love to show you guys.

check out my site, www.andrewmanley.com

back when i shot a lot, i had almost everything that canon produced, except for the really long zoom and prime telephots.

now i keep only what i need around.

if you guys are interested, make a list, if i can get 5-10 of you guys, that would be cool.

now we just need a place to meet up

Kel 06-27-2006 06:27 PM

Cool, I'd be interested. Any chance to have a shoot is a chance to learn. :)

MyEeek 06-27-2006 06:30 PM

I'd be very interested as well.

estukaye 07-14-2006 10:01 PM

Im actually looking to start a wedding photography biz,

Any weddings coming up I can assist with?

I shoot with a 5D (580ex on the way)

1036AP2 07-14-2006 11:15 PM

cancelled once again.

well, i guess there just isnt enough demand for it.

if any of you guys become interested and there is a party big enough, id love to help out.

good luck

flitcroft 07-16-2006 09:15 PM

Oh well, maybe I can make the new date.

estukaye, the 580ex is amazing. Make sure to pick up a Stofen Omnibounce for it. The flash really needs it.

geoff2005 07-16-2006 10:32 PM

anybody know where to get a rebel for good price besdies online, also when buying rebel would it be better to just buy the body and a different lense instead of the stock one. also which lense should be good starter.

estukaye 07-16-2006 10:36 PM

I have an Omnibounce on my 420ex..I guess its ok

Have you seen Gary Fongs Lightsphere? I heard great reviews on it

estukaye 07-16-2006 10:43 PM

Yes!

Bodies will come and go, but a good lens will last and last!

Depends on how much you want to spend, but once you get a L lens, I don't think you will be going back :)

Im debating between the 24-70 2.8L or the 24-105 F4 IS..more range or a faster lens...hmmm...

Hey Flitcroft, I checked out your photoblog, I was there last year. Actually thats what prompted me to buy a convertible, so I can cruise that gorgeous coastline :)

That lightsphere looks like it has decent results but it's huge and ugly! Here are some shots that I took at work in the last couple weeks to test out the 580ex. All the portraits have the Stofen on the flash. So far, I am very pleased with it.

I think the ones at the show at the Red Hot Roxy show at The Joint also have the Stofen but I'm not sure. Those were all bounced off a high ceiling.

geoff2005 07-17-2006 07:55 PM

can anybody answer my question beacuse i hope to purchase a canon soon

1036AP2 07-17-2006 08:41 PM

geoff, the stock 18-55mm lens isnt so bad for the price.
i have a lens that im going to sell cause i rarely use it for the purpose i purchased it for.

its a sigma 18-200mm. its got incredible range. its mainly a daylight shooter. the lens isnt fast but i used it mainly for days i wanted range. like i said, this isnt an amazing lens, but for the ranges that this lens offers, its hard to beat when you are on vacation.

the lens is about $330 brand new, but i will sell it for $280 if you want it. i have the box and everything that it came with. like new condition. i barely used it. ill also throw in a basic hoya filter. the lens also comes with a hood

the L series lenses are good however, most primes (mainly the USM and L primes) will beat any L zoom.

dont get caught up in the L craze when starting off in photography. just get a decent body (rebel xt or 20d) and a few starter lenses.

i recommend 50mm 1.4 and 100mm 2.0. both of these lens are about $300ish retail. you can get them used for $250ish. the quality is awesome on both.

as far as wide ranges go, there really arent anything that great in the lower priced ranges. so for these, i recommend the L series. an affordable one is 17-40mm L which is about $600ish.

for those of you with the ef-s bodies, the 10-22mm is equiv to the 16-35 L on a full frame body and can be lots of fun but beware there are lots of distortion on the widest angle.

1036AP2 07-17-2006 08:48 PM

btw: for those of you guys looking to sell your images, www.shutterstock.com is a great place to make some extra cash.

if you sign up for an account, use the following url to sign up for an acct.

its a referral url.

geoff2005 07-17-2006 08:51 PM

where can you find good used lense, i dont trust ebay with sending 300 ish dollars.

1036AP2 07-17-2006 08:53 PM

this is very true.

you can have an $8,000 body (1d mk2) and put a crappy lens on it and thats is exactly what you will get. a crappy image.

you can get a rebel with a 85L, 300L, etc and your images will clean.

there is a reason why a lens can cost way more than a body can.

ie:
85mm L 1.2: $2100
300mm IS: $3900
70-200IS: $1700

you get the point.

1036AP2 07-17-2006 08:57 PM

www.fredmiranda.com back in the day was a great place to buy and sell equip. however, in the recent months, they have gotten more strict on who can join and you need a good 100 posts to start selling or even buying.

there used to be really good deals but since the site has taken on so many members, it has gotten really hard to get a good deal cause people jump on deals like fly on ****.

there has been a lot of fraud guys crashing the site.

i havent been on fredmiranda.com for sometime now. its tough to say now. i know a decent amount of photographers and their equiment so thats how i get my stuff.

so to answer your question, im not sure. i havent been active in the equipment exchange sector for awhile. the equipment i have now fits what i shoot.

geoff2005 07-17-2006 09:08 PM

what would be a good day time/ night time lense

1036AP2 07-17-2006 09:15 PM

anything faster than f/2.8
but i dont recommend zooms unless you absolutely need them.

ie: weddings, races, editiorial, places where you cant move or if you are too lazy to move.

shooting with primes (non-zoom) can be a hassle but once you see the image quality out of them, its hard shooting otherwise.

the L zooms are great for what they are and what they provide (convenience) but if you want the best quality for the best price, get a prime USM.

like i said, come by one day and ill show you the sigma 18-200 lens. its an awesome lens to get started with. a lot of people start off with the 28-135mm lens but with the 1.6x crop bodies, the 28mm isnt wide enough.

once you get comfortable shooting and when you know what a shutter speed is and an aperture is, move on to something more advanced.

thats why i want to setup a meet so i can show the willing the basics...

geoff2005 07-17-2006 09:52 PM

yeah im down for a meet but ugh im either busy or nobody wants to show up

estukaye 07-17-2006 10:12 PM

I really don't think there is a good day or night time lens,

All lenses should perform just as well. If you want sharp nightime images, it has to go on a tripod, unless you're shooting at high ISO and low f stop.

If you are serious about this hobby, might as well plunk down the cash and get the good lenses now. They hold their value pretty well too, unlike bodies. So if you decide to sell it, you won't lose that much money if its mint.
Being able to shoot at F2.8 from 24mm all the way to 200mm comes in handy. Plus you get that nice red ring that says...Hey im a pro!
When using lower priced and less capable lenses I feel it really restricts my creativity.

geoff2005 07-17-2006 10:33 PM

i say we do it on sunday if u have time. ill be free, my friend with 06 STI would probably come possible my friend with 06 si with a rebel xt will come if hes not busy.
