Reagan called the Berkeley campus "a haven for communist sympathizers, protesters and sex deviants."
He said that like it's a bad thing.

I've come to realize that there will never be a government that represents me exactly.

I'm thinking that individuals should determine where their taxes go ie we have to pay a certain % of our income but we determine where it gets distributed to.

For example, I care about universal health care for all, free public education, and could care less about "national defense" aka bombing other countries. I therefore pool my money into those things that interest me most. That way I feel like I'm having a part in where my money is going.

I like.

Except I I find universal healthcare is a impossible task and that Defense should be the #1 spending priority and the #1 reason for the existence of a gov't period.

Our two opinions would in this case bring balance. It'd be interesting to go with this kinda thing. The money each division got would depend completely on how the American People feel. There would be massive scare tactics etc. all the time by political peeps. It's an interesting thought though. I'd be curious about how well it could be carried out.

I certainly like the idea, than again I think socialism is good "in theory".

But that's why we have the option to do what we please with our money.

It allows everyone a part in the political process in a very direct way.

Eventually it might all balance out.

WHY were they needed? I will not just take his word for it sorry. That would be over-simplifying
You've got to remember the time that these protests were going, (in the late 60s), the people, (protesters), were not all peace loving flower children making love in the park. There were many organized radical groups, bent on the violent overthrow of the government. Many of the groups that were formed as a result of the unrest in the 60s, were very organized and quite violent. Black Panther Party, the Students for a Democratic Society, the Weather Underground Organization, and the Youth International Party, just to name a few. Some existed before the Berkley protests some were formed after, but nearly all had there roots in those protests.

So when police show up to keep peace and protect the community and are vastly outnumbered, once the rock and bottles start flying, they may need some backup.

Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of good social changes that came from these protests, but I'm also glad that most of these groups were eliminated. I'd hate to think of a world run by the Weather Underground Organization or the Symbionese Liberation Army.
