1st Gen Mitsu Eclipse
I'm looking to buy a second car that's practical, seats four and is reliable, but fun to drive. I was looking at this 94 Mitsubishi Eclipse (not the GS) with 76k miles. How are they in terms of reliability? I am not looking for a high HP car (already have the S). I always liked my friend's Eagle Talon back in the day. Should I go with the GS model?
I had a base model 93 Plymouth Laser for a winter beater for a few months some winters back. I paid $800 for it and it served me well. I never had a problem. It was slow, but very light and handled well. One thing I did learn is that the better models (twin cams?) have "interference" valvetains, which basically means that if the timing belt has been neglected and breaks, the valvetrain is toast. For what I was able to gather, the lowest engine choice would not destroy any parts if the belt were to snap. This may or may not be a consideration for you. Also, someone please feel free if I am wrong in any of this. I grew up with Small Block Chevys with OHVs and timing chains, so I may be a little off with the OHC terminology.
whether or not the valvetrain is damaged depends on things like the shape of the pistons, compression ratio, and luck.
the higher end cars were more aggressive and if the belt breaks, piston-valve contact can occur.
stay away from the first gen and second gen DSMs...if you must get one, get a stick. the autos are crap.
