I personally would keep the S over a cayman... i hear they drive like a dream but so does the S at a fraction of the price! only reason im looking z06 is to live some of that ls-3 power! i may hate it, i dunno, gotta try it, the price is so good.

I think I am going to save up for a cayman S.

thank you!
I might go test drive an 04 Z06 tomorrow and then take out a new Mustang GT just so I can get a better feeling about both of them NOT being my next car lol! There's one at a Ford dealer next to the Honda dealer that's taking care of a couple things for me on warranty.

Not sure why you left out the 01 and 04. For the 01 im going to guess it is a HP thing, but that is easily fixed with the money you saved form getting a 2002+. Also if you plan to modify I wouldnt even bother with a z06 unless you like the body style more then the coupe/vert.

Dont forget the LS9
I owned an '02 Z06 for 4 years. Wonderful car for performance, but started to show its age big time by the time I sold it (electrical gremlins, sensors, fit and finish). It's easy to hype yourself up about the car, but anytime you need to fix it (no matter how seemingly small the issue) have at least $1000 ready. Same goes if you want to modify it, but coming from the S2000 world, that shouldn't be such a shock to you.
You can PM me if you need to know more. Good luck!

I think you are forgetting something of value when considering the c5 versus the c5 Z06 "if you track the car", the dry sump oiling system. It is a far superior system for keeping the engine cool in various ways. capacity, pressure, greater surface area to dicipate heat etc..
If the dry sump system is not adequate for HPDE and or TT, then I would consider it a crap shoot otherwise if you are going to upgrade brakes and suspension anyways. kicker is, it's not indequate.

C5Z did not have a dry sump. That didnt start until the C6Z.

The C5 Z seems to be well-recognized as the best starting platform for a late model Corvette if you're going to track it. There's a lot of engineering that makes it superior to a base C5 for that.
Sure but there is no significant difference like the C6 vs C6Z06.; Sway bars, shocks, springs, transmission and diff gearing, wheels and tires, axle back exhaust, heads and cam. And the thinner windshield. Most of which people change if they are going to modify there corvette. To make a base C5 outrun a Z06 is just a cam swap away. And to make it keep up on a track Is just changing the suspension that you were going to change anyway if you track it.
