2011 Car of the Year.. so far?
As we're winding down new model introductions for the year... which car do you think will get 2011 COTY from most publications?
Some cars that stand out to me and seem to be making the most noise:
Hyundai Sonata: great styling (even if a bit controversial) and even greater MPG. People can't wait for the turbo version to hit showroom floors.
Ford Fiesta: Seems to have taken the title away from the Honda Fit as the king of the econobox. Who needs hyrbrids?
But the one car that has made the most noise this year.... FORD MUSTANG. Hard to say anything new that hasn't been already said. Has great performance-for-dollar performance value especially the GT; just kills its competitors in all comparison tests. If you're looking for MPG, the V6 will get you 30+. I'm not sure when a publication has last had the Mustang as COTY, I don't think it was even within my lifetime.. but I'm confident that at least some domestic publications will have Ford taking away some COTY trophies this year.

Mustang, for sure, if we're picking cars that are relatively affordable. That said, I'm not sure if it'd be the GT (great motor) or the V6 base model (nearly as quick as the old GT, better gas mileage, etc, etc, at a very low initial price). Heck, the GT500 is an altogether new beast that is quicker and "better" than its predecessor in virtually every way. It's just not as good as a similarly priced Vette...
The Fiesta isn't here yet but those that have driven our US version (in prototype form) have stated that it's not necessarily as engaging as the Fit, it is far more cramped, less useful, and feels cheaper as well. It's definitely not a clear winner.
Sonata is definitely a controversial choice. Pending real-world fuel mileage results, it really isn't a game changer, it's just way better than the prior Sonata so that makes it look significant. It's not necessarily better handling than any of the other offerings in its segment, nor any faster, nor necessarily any more fuel efficient (comparos have put it roughly equal to the rest of the pack). It's just a more polarizing design, I think.
