Jetta TDI's have never required an additive.
Additionally, the MB CDI's didn't require additives until ~'08 IIRC, which props up resale of the earlier ones due to one less hassle, one less expense, and a spare tire where a tank of urea now exists? $316 for a tank of something that's in my urine? I guess the Germans must have special pee.
Even w/o the cost per mile benefit, I'd still prefer a diesel in a vehicle like this for torque, towing capacity, and longer range.

$1,457.80 per 100,000 miles, covered by BMW for the first 50,000 miles = $0.014 per mile. At 19mpg, that's a fuel premium of $0.276982 per gallon, or at $2.57/gal for diesel that's the equivalent of 17mpg without the piss premium.
