Default 997 Test Drive

Holy Sh**, Holy Sh**, Holy Sh**. I knew it was a bad choice, but I think I'm finally hooked on going with a 997 coupe for my next car. Doing so though will mean selling both the 996 and my BMW.

I expected it to be better than my 996, obviously, but I also expected it to feel much heavier, and that that would make me feel a little better about my 996. Nope. Not at all. I've waited to test drive one, due to my fear of loving it too much. It's happened.

I'm posting this for several reasons, one: anyone else had similar experiences with the car? And two, I'm going to pose my current situation. I've got 3 cars, and I'm tired of spending half of my life in some sort of car shop... as much as I love cars. I'm looking to downsize to two vehicles. Let's ignore the S2000 for a moment here. I've got a 3 series and a 996 Cab. What I want is a capable daily driver that's still an actual sports car, rather than just being sporty. The only thing that's hitting me as a possibility is a 997. Any other ideas?

I understand that the 2011 998 is coming out early in 2010... I'm thinking I'll wait until that comes out, decide if it's worth it over the 997, or pickup an '09 997 and save a few bucks.

Thoughts?

JMO,

I wouldn't DD a Porsche. To me, they are out of my price range and too prestigious to allow rock chips, scratches, etc on the car. Do they make a great car? Absolutely. Hell, even if I had the money, I would choose something a little more practical instead of racking up the miles on a car that will be expensive to maintain and repair.

Again, just my opinion. I'm not trying to knock or put down the 997 in any way.

I can see your point but I personally could not have a sports car just to look at! That is like having Halle Berry as a girlfriend and not hitting it on the regular.

I love to drive I guess and think cars should be driven.

I like the way you think. Too often people idealize cars, keeping them locked away most of the time to avoid rock chips, appreciating it for its 'heritage,' 'beauty,' or what it could potentially do if they pushed it. I say drive your car whenever you feel like it. It's bad enough when people live such restrained lives to keep 'healthy,' even worse when they do the same for a machine like an automobile.

Unfortunately my second car is (and would be in this circumstance) an S2000, which is arguably less of a daily driver. I would probably put on one of the clear bras onto the car, to help prevent rock chips. Eventually the plan is to pick up a Ferrari 360 when I feel comfortable enough doing so... I feel that the 911, the 997 in particular, serves just as well as a GT car as it does a Sports Car. Down the line I might pickup some cheap junker to drive on particularly bad days, but I also have access to other vehicles as well, so I'm not planning to do so immediately.

Define "sports car" vs. "sporty car."

DD a Porsche? Sure, but certainly not any 911. Too expensive to DD IMO. Maybe a Boxster or Cayman. Then again, do they fall into your "sports car" category?

I test drove a 997 in 05. Was a game changer. No way would I ever own a 996. I'd take a 997 Carrera S over a 996 Turbo.
