You can pick up an early 90's low mileage Acura Legend for 5-6K.

IMO, absolutely the BEST value in used car market for 5-6K. Big, comfortable, 200HP V6, extremely well-built and extremely reliable. Think about it: it is only *slightly* more expensive than an Accord or Camry of similar age, mileage and condition, but you get A LOT nicer car.

I sold my 5 spd Acura Vigor with 176hp and 170lb/ft torque for $4000. I truly miss that car, great for hauling kids, quite spacious with 4 people, good solid car.

I would go with a Honda since you can fix them easier. Or even like a Toyota Camry. My friends camry is going on 315,000 miles on the same motor. Runs great as his beater.

If you can swallow your pride you can get a Hudai for cheap with a 10 year 100k warranty.

You can get a '99 Nissan Altima with about 60-70k for about $6,500. If you want to spend less, you can go with one that's a little older or has some more miles. They're good cars, but don't seem to hold their value as well as the Toyotas or Hondas, probably because they don't look to good.
