Audi R8 V12 TDI
Keep in mind that with the much taller gearing required for the lower redline of the deisel engine, the torque produced by the wheels will likely be similar to what any other 500 hp engine would do, even if it's a high-revving 350lb-ft gasoline engine.

Seems dumb that audi would put such alow revving motor in a sports car, right?
Exactly, assuming the gearing is done appropriately for each engine, the same car with either a 500 hp high-revving gasoline engine or a 500 hp deisel torque monster should get pretty much the same performance.
It's not dumb, it's brilliant - it should get phenominal gase milage for that level of performance. (Reference Audi's R10 in ALMS.)

Not to mention, the R10 has been a super reliable platform/motor for Audi. It will have a dramatically different feel with the low rpm, high torque motor, but I bet it will be a blast to drive, with great long-term reliability, and superb fuel economy (relatively speaking).

I only mean it is dumb in the sense that for me (and a lot of others), a sports car should rev all day - and that one probably won't. Sure, you're going fast, but it just wouldn't be right w/o a screaming gas engine behind your head.
Don't get me wrong, I'd still rock it - it just wouldn't be my choice.

Insane. Although cars with uber torque curves take away some driver interaction when on the street. Instead of rowing through the gears you pretty much stick it in third and leave it there. It'll be like a Viper, but with even MORE torque at an even LOWER rpm. It probably hits 400lb-ft at WOT at idle
Why even bother more than two gears, one for highway, one for everything else
