Default Beater / Daily Driver

I am looking for a beater / daily driver for under $2000, what would you suggest? I want something good on gas and better than the S in the snow (hahahaa).

92-95 5th gen civic-vx/cx is the best gas mileage, premium prices here so try something like a Toyota Corolla
honda delsole is functional.

The Civics and to a lesser extent Corollas generally hold their value too well for nice examples to drop under $2000. I'd focus on something like a Mazda Protege, Nissan Sentra, or Geo Prism (yes, I know it's a rebranded Corolla, but they cost less...)

THanks for the info. I had a mazda protege back in high school and it never gave me problems, so I may start there.

Mazda Protege or Geo Prism. Very tough to get a Civic in that price range. Protege would be my choice - a few people I know back in Canada had them and they were very reliable.

Also along the lines of the Protege are the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer. They had the same platform and drivetrains as the Mazda Protege, but they cost considerably less than even the Protege.

Another option might be an older 2wd, 4 cyl Nissan, Toyota, or Mazda pickup. Although in your price range, they are likely to be cosmetically rusty. And they are not good in the snow unless you get a set of snow tires for them.

I dont really want a 1988 car...I'd like something with at least passenger and drivers side airbags as it will be my commuter car.

I will look into the subaru too.
