Autoweek has a short blurb on it:

I actually saw the test mules in person. They were parked in a hotel lot behind a local Mercedes/BMW dealer. At first glance I thought they were something from Daewoo. Just nasty. They had a hatch and a sedan version. Both models had a lot of the typical masking in place, so it was hard to get a clear look.
Like I said, I though they were cars from Daewoo, so I passed them by. It wasn't until I read the AutoWeek article that I recongnized the ugly little car as being from BMW.
To answer your question, at $22K my German car has a 1.8T with 180hp. I like BMW, but not enough to bend over for one.
