Default C6 vette vs 911 (997)

I know there's a big price difference, and I've rounded up.

***Poll took out the price in (K)****

C6 ($50K)
C6 vert ($60K)
911 ($70K)
911 S ($80K)

To keep you from saying you'll take the most expensive car (natch), let's say you have to kick in half the difference.

So if you take the C6 vert you kick in $5K, 911 (base) $10K and if you take the 911 S you have to kick in $15K.

I say kick in only half the difference because say you want to sell them later on, the 911s should be worth $5-15K more.

In case you don't know the specs:

C6 6.0L V8 400hp 400-TQ 3200 lbs
911 3.6L 325hp 273-TQ 3075 lbs
911 S 3.8L 355hp 295-TQ 3130 lbs

weights est. from manufacturer.

The C6 is the clear winner in terms of price and performance.

Both have a great and long heritage.

This could quickly turn into a NSX vs Z06 type of debate -- but then in this case both cars are actually quick.

I love my 911 Turbo -- but I plan on getting a C6 Z06 too. Why not both?

You are not serious.

Porsche all the way...oh and be sure to put "turbo" in front of that S.

I would take a 911 anything over the vette!

I have not been a fan of where Porsche has been going recently in the hp department. I personally think the new C6 will rip a new one in the Carrera/Carrera S. Given that I would still get the Porsche. The Corvette is a great car for the money, but it just has a very large "cheese" factor to it. I get visions of 50 year old men, with chest hair coming out of their open shirts, and gold chains. If you are looking for nothing more than performance then the money doesn't lie. But for decent performance, looks, prestige the Porsche is hard to beat. That said I wouldn't mind if they added another 20-30 hp to it without charging us an arm & leg for it.

obviously this purely bench racing/picking(since none of us have driven either of this cars). However, the c6 z51 with HUD will suffice for now. However, i would rather wait and get the c6 z06.

Steve(please call me cheapshot) C- did you see the Top gear video where the NSX pulls on the C6

I would have thought that the C6 would be easily faster (0-60, 1/4, track) than a 997. And that NSX pulling on it was nonsense.

But then I fished out my old 3/02 R&T which tested the Z06 (405 hp) v 911 (320hp) v NSX (290 hp) and saw the NSX was fastest 0-20, with Z06 in the rear. Z06 bettered them at 60 and 1/4 by 0.3. And with professional Steve Millen at the healm, the Z06 was only 0.5 sec faster on a 2 min course (caveat: wet). So, close enough that sample and driver variations might tell the difference.

But all of that is magazine racing. It really comes down to which one appeals to you. I love the sound of the 911. It feels more refined. If it was "only" $10K, I'd probably choose it. But since I may eventually get a new 'Vette for considerably under $35K, it becomes a no-brainer.

While no one has driven either car, is true. However I have and others have driven the C5 and the 996. I think we can get a good idea about what the new cars will drive like considering the engines and suspensions and weight and weight distributions haven't changed much (at all).

We also know how common the cars are going to be. I see C5s every day, they're a dime a dozen. Soon the C6 wil be as common. I guess they'll sell 30K C6s a year.

We know the C6 is faster, and will be faster around the track. But for me I don't race on the street or track. So the absolute time is academic. The 911S will be significantly faster than the S2000. Probably a full second in normal spirited driving 0-60.

These two cars are in a totally different price bracket makes it hard to comp the two out... If money was a factor, no brainer... C6!

I'd still take the 911 though, I've driven them... the handling on those cars is awesome, aesthetically appealing, low profile enough to drive daily, decent amount of tq which is very nice 290ft lbs... 911's are sweet!

BTW, my vote was for the 997 C4S 0-60 in 4.8

This is the first time I've seen mag. racing for 0-20 times, WTF? You ever think the NSX and 911 might get the jump off the line due to better weight transfer attributable to their engine placement?

And comparing wet track times is almost pointless, unless you enjoy risking your car by racing around in the rain (my doesn't leave the garage in such conditions).

My decision is easy, since I'm already considering a Z51 coupe for my next car ('06 at the earliest). I love 911's, but I'm not rich. The C6 seems to have cured the biggest "issues" of its predecessor, and appears to be an incredibly priced complete package.

Hmm...tough call.

I agree with steve C, I'll take the C6 and the 911s
