Default Car and Driver's article on EVO vs. STi

Just read June 2003's C&D's article on EVO vs. STi, and they gave the first spot to EVO, which I'm sure many (including Scot) would be happy to see. Both cars feature flaws that I think most drivers wouldn't get to feel or see anyway. However, I think overall the STi with a tendancy to be have more understeer *may* make normal drivers like myself feel a little more at home. Handling wise it would seem the EVO has an edge, but power wise the 0.5L displacement advantage certainly helps the STi's cause.

I wouldn't pay a penny over sticker for either cars though, and looking at EVO's production schedule, I think there would be plenty of bargains in a few months for those who are patient - same goes for the STi.

I think some of the criticisms aimed at the STi are valid, and though they can be addressed with aftermarket parts, I'm hoping Subaru will fix them down the line a year or two from now, which exactly when I plan to get the car

I heard Subaru is making only 3000 STis for 2003, while Mitsubishi is making 6500+ EVOs. I hope Subaru BSed the number, so I don't have to wait for mine. Otherwise I'd just get the EVO or wait for the S60r.

i probably would not have paid MSRP in hindsight, but I have had my car for almost 2 months now.... Nothing I don't like about it so far... gas mileage is 19mpg with me driving over 100mph almost daily on the way to work.

I am going to the same track i took the S2000 next saturday....that will be the true test in my mind... i drove pretty hard in the S2000 (which had tein coilovers and single exhaust..with stock tires).....the evo is dead stock, so we'll see... I have lap times from before, and lap times from Car and Driver with the S2000 (that comparo with the 350Z, S2000, MachI and TT was run at www.beaverun.com).

No complaints about Evo except I paid $30,052 and with 1500 miles it is probably not worth more than $27,500..... but that is normal...i guess.

I would have loved to drive this STI and my #13 S2000 back to back at ThunderHill, but the journalist's car detailer guy wouldn't give me the keys!

outside of the original launch, an S2000 will almost keep up with an Evo....basically driver differences will win the race...... I think the handling of the Evo is better, but I imagine with 500lbs less to slow down, that the braking of the S2000 is better.....so... I pretty much expect very very similar lap times (1:10X) at beaverun. We'll see...

KEKOA,

i test drove the evo at Miller in Van Nuys and in Ventura, CA at the Johnson rd. dealer. Show up in a fancy car and be cool and they will let you test drive. Miller asking 7K over but i said sticker and they will do it, Ventura is asking sticker now.
