I had a Cruze rental (same 1.4 turbo engine) that I really liked but the battery needed replacing with 3500 miles on the odo lol
Yeah I drove a Cruze and it was pretty boring. The engine was way too weak for me. I had vans passing me.
Was it the auto or manual? The sonic comes with the 1.4T in manual only.

Used Camrys make great daily drivers too and cheaper than buying new, I used to daily one when my commute was similar to yours.
I like toyota, but I want it to still be a 'fun' car to drive. When I test drove a corolla S, corolla and a camry. The steering was not as responsive (slow), the ride was nice, but when making tight turns, I felt the car understeer alot. It's a good car, but I think Toyota forgets to put some form of performance into a car like the corolla or camry, but this was last year, so things may have changed. I do want my DD to still be fun to get into, and have some performance. I know it's out there.

The Honda Fit makes a great DD.

07-08 fit sport body style is nice. I have one and it's great at DD. sporty suspension, low gearing (1-2). What it does, it does well.

MPG could be better but it has a small gas tank to begin with, roomy and flexible.

It does get decent MPG. However, to me, the fit is not aesthetically pleasing, and the more things I want in it, the wider I have to open my wallet. As I said earlier, the newer models appear look like mini-mini vans.

Thats what I wanted. However, most in California on Craigslist and EBAY and even dealer have a very high amount of mileage on them, and the last thing I want is another repair bill. Believe me, I actually wanted one so bad, I test drove three weeks ago with 98K on it. Not to mention, those are getting harder and harder to find.

Check autotrader.com and cars.com..... I do the nationwide search. I saw a few in Cali... I hear they are pretty reliable even with 100k miles, long as they haven't been abused.

Instead of the Civic, check out the Focus SVT. Better driving car and probably doesn't have the used Civic premium.

X2

The Civic Si is the one of the most reliable, cheapest to own/maintain, and fun hatchbacks. I know a lot of people who regret getting rid of their EP3's. Happy hunting!
