I'm thinking of getting a beater car for this winter. What car should I be looking for? The only requirement is that it has to be FWD. I only have about $1500 - 2000, so I know its gonna be a piece of crap, but thats really all I need. I'll have the s2000 for the nice days.

Seriously. . .you could always pick up one of those straggling Cavaliers for new. With the $10,000 Rebate and -0.5% financing, it's a deal from heaven!

I've got a 91 corolla for my winter beater. Like the civic, they're cheap, reliable, and there's tons of them! Mine has monster 5" wide tires so it goes through the snow as well as most AWD cars do. At this point I think you'd be able to hunt down a moderate mileage 4 door for about $2000.

 

I plan on buy'n a CRX, decent shape, around $1200, then next winter toss a B16 in her, then have decent winter beater for around 3k I fell in love with the B16 in my 99SI, gotta find a way to get that motor +F20C in my life.

I second keojing's subaru recommendation. Unlike Toyotas, and Hondas, the subarus have poor resale even though they are probably as reliable. That will help u get a newer car(with safety features like airbags) for the same money. in the early to mid 90's the subaru legacy and the impreza came with fwd or awd, so you get the flexibility of picking from fwd or awd.

My dad had a 93 legacy with 120k miles on it. The only thing that broke was the cassette player.

Older Scoobys have piss-poor resale values. I picked up a '92 Legacy AWD sedan -- listed as "not running" -- with 115,000mi for $500.00. All it needed was a new timing belt, water pump and belt tensioner. It's been running great since.
