Default Difference between fastbacks and hatchbacks

I'm not entirely clear on the definition of fastback and hatchback. Are they mutually exclusive or is one just a different type of the other? Also, where does the definition of coupe fit in?

Here are some examples of cars that I think are fastbacks but could go in any direction.

94-2002 Acura Integra
86-92 RX7
93-97 RX7
92-97 Toyota Paseo
90-95 Toyota MR2

What are your thoughts?

Best way to see it:

Fastback: all past Integras.
Hatchback: Civic hatchback.

Wish I had pics to demonstrate.

I think it has to do with the slope of the rear. Fastbacks are much closer to coupes than hatchbacks.

A hatchback has a... well, a hatch on the back.

A fastback is characterized by a slopey rear propfile with a short trunk. A good example of a fastback is the original 1960s Ford Mustang Fastback. Modern examples might include the new Ford Mustang or the Mazda RX-8.

e.g:

Hatchbacks and fastbacks are mutually exclusive. None of the cars you listed have a trunk, so none of them would be considered a fastback.

Don't forget about notchbacks - they have the slopey rear glass with an abbreviated trunk, similar to a fastback. The RX-7 is a hatchback.

Er, traditionally notchbacks had relatively vertical rear windows. The S2000 with a permanent hardtop would be pretty close to a notchback ... or do a search for Mustang notchbacks on line.
