Default Ebay a good place for used bikes?

Now that I am taking the MSC, I am looking ahead to purchasing a bike. It seems that ebay has many to offer, and I really would like to get a 1-2 year old bike. Anyone buy there bike online? It is a big purchase, but it seems there are some good deals it seems. How well do bikes hold their value?

personally i'd only purchase a bike on ebay if i could go check out the bike before completing the transaction (i.e. the seller wasn't TOO far from me). i had a friend who bought a bike off ebay and he had a really bad experience, ended up spending quite a bit on it to make it rideable again (it looked perfect but the forks and subframe had been tweaked).

As far as value goes i think it depends on what bike you're looking for, and the time of year you're looking. Atleast that's how it is here in CA. generally the price goes down during the offseason and goes back up during riding season. I'd say the mid-class trendy bikes hold their value the best (i.e. 600 supersports) because they usually have the highest demand, but it's always possible to find a good deal.

good luck!

I sold my old bike on eBay and it was in very nice shape. My guess is that most being sold are fine and the sellers are trustworthly. One friend of mine bought both his car and bike on eBay and pretty much got ripped on both. They just were not in the condition promised. Both were modified and not original though so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. If I were to purchase over eBay, it would have to be bone-stock, have tons of pictures, and be from a seller with a very good (and high) feedback rating.

I have purchased two bikes on E-bay, the first one was a 5 year old moded Triumph Speed Triple with 26,000 miles which I purchased for $2,500.00 and the second was a 5 year old Honda XR650L for $2,1000.00 with 8,600 miles.

Both bikes were good deals and I was satisfied with the purchase decision. In both cases the sellers provided a lot of information via telephone and e-mail and both went out of their way to make the sale as smooth as possible. Also, I did not provide any prepayment prior to inspection with the Triumph and put down 10% via Paypal on the Honda prior to inspection. Indeed, we renegotiated the price on the Honda after discovering that the starter button was broken on the bike while it was being loaded prior to delivery to the satisfaction of both the seller and myself.

That said, there are many horror stories out there of people that have gotten burned. Buyer beware holds true for any used vehicle, especially when purchased via an auction. Sellers usually will use the auction as a last resort if a sale hasn't materialized through other local efforts.

I got a 95 Honda VFR. I never had a bike and had no idea what to look for. For me it was great. I knew the bike was a reliable one as the seller drove it from the west coast. I spent the winter fixing it up nothing major just cleaning, painting, adjusting. I replaced the springs and cleared 500 when I sold it in 8 months. I figured it was just a matter of time before I went down. I really liked it though.
