Elise vs S2000

like the title says, which one handles better.

which one is the best handling car under 50K

The Elise drives and handles much more like a racecar than the S2000. In fact after driving the Elise the S2000 feels like a big bloated GT by comparison. That's not knocking the S2K in any way, it's just that the Elise rides rougher, is louder, and compromises much less than the S2000.

No competition, the S2000 handles FAR better than the Elise.

depends what your definition of handling is....but I think elise has a distinct advantage (less weight)

The Elise compromises much less than the S2000. I thought it compromised much more. The S2000 is downright luxurious compared to the Elise.

Since I only paid $46K for a new Z06 can I play in the "best handling car under $50K" game?

The local auto-x'ers are having some trouble with the Elise. Not sure about the specifics but the complaint is a handling problem. Low weight helps everything but it is not the end-all be-all of handling. Of course, my '01 S2000 had a few handling quirks too.

Yep -- the handling problem Elise autocrossers are struggling with is inside rear wheelspin. However, unlike in the S2000, the problem may not be curable. The S2000 has a Torsen LSD, so as long as you keep that inside rear on the ground, you're good. The Elise has an open diff, which will make conquering the wheelspin much more difficult.

Consider that the MR2 Spyder has been largely abandoned at the national level due to incurable wheelspin, then consider that the Elise has nearly half again as much power.

On the track (and of course on the street), this won't be such a big deal -- I presume that's why Lotus didn't spec an LSD -- but for autocross, it's potentially fatal.

Steve you're 100% correct. It seems that the LSD system they've been testing has caused some bad spins and they're not willing to release it to the US public yet. They have a cure but it would raise the price of the car a good bit. Some of the guys feel like they're getting close to having it dialed in and I think they will.
