I was looking at buying a ep3 civic vtec 197bhp before i bought my ap1 s2000. But im sat wondering what honda did to get a extra 40bhp out of a 2ltr vtec engine for the s2000?

Does it have more aggressive cams or higher compression?

I'm sure there is a long list of mechanical differences, but among them (I believe) is that the F20C has a higher CR, better head, and a slightly oversquare engine that (among other things) allows a higher redline.

 

Ah cool, so what do the civics rev to? 8000?

I would have thought a 2ltr n/a 4 pot was at its limit with 200bhp its quite unbelievable to me they found a extra 40bhp! Haha

 

Yep, I believe 8000 is the EP3 redline. The F20C is a special engine

 

Many things could have been done on the F20C vs. K20A. Mainly, this includes a higher redline, which dictates a shorter stroke for the F20 so that it doesn't go tossing pistons into traffic. Accompanying the higher redline are camshafts with appropriate valve timing designed for higher rpm running. That is why the F20 extracts more power, in a nutshell. Being "over-square" doesn't really mean you can have a higher redline, the crankshaft stroke is the main driver of maximum engine speed. However, I would bet that the K20 has a beefier midrange than the F20, it's all about design intent and the trade-offs involved with that.

 

Head over to the forced induction forum and have your mind blown. Dudes over there are making 600+whp on the stock bottom ends.

Packaging is entirely different, too. The F20 has FRM cylinders, counter-clockwise rotation and is not transverse mounted.

Iv had many fast turbo imports myself and they're not for me now im getting old haha. Saying that I do respect guys running boost on a stock N/A bottom end!!

 

While that is true, it has no bearing on the extra power that the F20 generates over the K20.
