It's still as hideous as the 8, and doesn't look any different. HP has only increased by a few, and this is a whole new generation. That sucks!
Looks are subjective to everyone. Personally, I like the Evo 8 front bumper, but I like the Evo 9 rear bumper a lot.
It will probably have MIVEC, too (like VTEC) to go with the 300hp. I'm still hanging around for the next GT-R though.
"Looks are subjective" but it can only go so far to sugarcoat an ugly car. That's same as saying there's no beautiful car because looks are subjective. I am sorry, but if, say, 9 out of 10 people think EVO is an ugly car (that has been my experience), then it is an ugly car. The EVO has identity crisis all over its design from bumper to bumper. If it looks like a skunk and smells like a skunk, then it is a skunk.
Love the EVO's performance. If the car were half decent looking and had the interior quality of a Civic even, I'd bought one.

My theory is this: People who say the Evo or WRX are "ugly" are the same people who never watch rallying. If you're like me, and you've been watching the WRC for years, even before either one of these cars were sold in the United States, then they are beautiful. That's because my first experience with these cars was seeing them flying sideways on gravel in New Zealand, or airborne in Finland, or bouncing down a dry river bed in Kenya. When you've seen them doing what they were designed to do, they are no longer ugly.
I can understand if one's only experience with the car was seeing it on a dealer's lot, or puttering around the mall, then it might just look like an ugly sedan. However, they should not be compared with grocery-getters, or luxury sport sedans, or the vast majority of other street cars. They are unique in their purpose, and beautiful in the way they fulfill that purpose.

It's probably not going to have a significantly higher peak HP rating. The Evo has never been about impressive peak power ratings for marketing purposes. The EVO's peak HP has been stuck at 276hp (280ps) since 1996. What it WILL get is an even broader torque band from the MIVEC system - even more area under the power curve. MIVEC is essentially Mitsu's version of VTEC. MIVEC offers variable valve timing and 2-stage variable valve lift. And this will be the first Evo (and first WRC car) to encorporate that engine technology.
I like the revised front and rear facias on the IX better than the current Evo. And as someone else pointed out, it's not a redesign, just a refreshening. The REAL changes are under the valve cover.

I've loved rally since I can remember, especially the group-B cars. While I agree that what they're capable of is nothing short of amazing (mainly driver talent), the street/consumer evo is still "ugly". I respect it for its mechanical aspects but the designers seemed to make it a bit too tacky. It's better then most, not better than all but that's just my opinion. Maybe there's hope yet.
The whole point of these cars is that you can't judge a book by it's cover, yet this is exactly what has happened in this thread. You should really know better than to diminish this car to mear black and white specs. On that basis, there is no way the current Evo could be one of the best handeling cars in the world, and as fast as any supercar in real world conditions, yet somehow it is.
Mistubishi will be cooking up something very special, like they always do. Video of the car testing at the Nordschleife alone should tell you that.
PS- I really like the Evo8 styling, and the front bumper is the best part IMO
