Default Friend needs some help

I'm not sure if this is appropriate as it's not S2K related so feel free to delete the post if it isn't but I have a friend who's got a problem with his Ford Focus and who has been getting a bit of the run around for the past few weeks.

I thought I'd offer him to post it up here on S2KI as I know our under the hood section is full of knowledgeable mechanically inclined people who might be able to offer him advice.

Here is his post from his local forum, thanks in advance for any help you can provide him with:

I have a 2003 Ford Focus ZX3 (2.3L PZEV) with 90k miles and I am getting a grinding / rattling coming from the front of the vehicle. It started very subtly around 87-88k miles and has progressively gotten worse. Below is a list of specifics about the grinding

WHat kind of a grind is it? Grind like metal dragging on concrete or grind like "Shit I just mis-shifted a full throttle second gear shift and grinded"?

how long ago did the grinding start, and was there anything that happened around that time that could have caused some damage, like maybe hitting a major pothole?

Fords never fall apart, you must be thinking of a different car.

Hey everyone,
I'm the Buddy that Shift 2k is trying to help. This weekend I'm going to be replacing the support bearing on the CV joint and I'm hoping that's going to fix it but I'm really not sure. If it were the bearing wouldn't it happen all the time instead of going away? Some people have said it might be the transaxle or something along those lines...

It's not that I've been getting the runaround, but when i went to the dealership the service guy wrote down the wrong description, then I talked to the mechanic myself and described it to him and he told me it sounds like it may be a tranny issue. I took it to a tranny guy and he said it's not the tranny... I replaced the CV joint and nothing changed. Come to find out it was a faulty cv joint but I just found it wierd for it to have not changed at all. I would expect it to be somewhat different. I just want this fixed and no one seems to know exactly what's wrong with it and it's just getting frustrating. I was talking to Shift and we came to the conclusion that i may spend hundreds of dollars trying to fix the problem but end up with alot of new parts and no solved problem. =o) Sucks to be me right about now.

I just wanna say thanks for all the info on this...
