Hey was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to save gas. For my DD car, 2005 Accord V6, I would get atleast 200 miles at the half mark gauge. Now I'm only getting about 160 to 170 miles when i reach the halfway mark. I use to estimate atleast 27 mpg, but now it's almost 20.

I'm down in Florida, so it's either AC or the windows down. I know AC kills, and having the windows down causes drag for your car. Anyone know how fast you can go with the windows down without affecting gas mileage? Also, the car gets 30 mpg highway, but how fast is highway driving actually?

I think I usually drive in the same manner as always, which is not too aggresive, keeping the RPM's below 3 or 4 and not hitting VTEC that much. Anyone knows what problems I could have that affects gas mileage? I had the same problem with my 2000 civic, eventually it started to eat gas, but I never looked into it since I got a new DD. I don't want this happening to my accord. If you could help out, thanks!

 

Check tire pressure (more pressure = better mileage but lower grip limits, past a certain point), accellerate less aggressively, keep it in as high of a gear as you can without bogging the engine. Avoid changing speeds as much as possible.

I've heard that on the highway, the AC is better for mileage. Under around 40-50, the windows would be better.

no AC (fan only), windows up, top up is best for mileage.

AC is never good for fuel economy.

 

High speed is bad. EPA highway mileage estimate is done at no more than 60 mph (average of 48 mph). If you're averaging 75-85 mph you could be down 10-20%.

 

AC is fine when you drive above 50+. Just put the windows up because you are creating drag if you dont. If you are city driving it, then turn off the ac and put the windows down.

Better than windows down at high speeds and in high heat, it's the best option.

 

Shift at 3,000 RPMs. I did this in my old Jetta and although not much fun, it gets noticabley better gas mileage. I think the EPA guys probably shift at 3K, imagine doing that in a Ferrari?!>!

 

I believe the show Myth Busters on Discovery said that 50mph was the crossover point to use AC. I think AAA says the same thing too.
