Question Hatch Wars

OK, used car purchase question.

In the red corner...
2001 GTI GLX VR6 w/ 50k miles and all options for $14,800 (a bit high)

In the blue corner...
2002 Honda Civic Si w/ 99k miles and all options for $10-11k (great value)

Which would you pick? Both are in great condition, and I have driven both.

My heart is with the GTI because of its looks and the sound the engine makes. My head is with the Si since it is significantly cheaper and on paper lacks almost nothing compared to the GTI, other than 14hp, some torque, 2 cylinders, and the sound of a European 6. Both have had CAIs put on, but nothing else beyond that. The Si has a set of lowering springs that would be part of the purchase, though I don't think I'd actually put them on.

This is basically at the level of a purchase decision.

This being a Honda board I think you'll find that the vast majority of people will say Civic.

I on the other hand would take the GTi without question. The VR6 is a great motor and the interior of the 2001 GTi's was fantastic.

In terms of performance, I believe that Car and Driver did a comparo. The GTi was faster in a straight line, the Civic was better in the corners. No surprise there.

GTIs have a tendency of needing some TLC, but the VR6 motor is godly, chirping third is always fun.
I had the choice a couple of years ago and I went with the SI, btw, you could pick up a newer SI (nicer headlights, 16in rims, loads better looking) for about 12,500 with a lot less miles, if owners are asking for more, trust me you can negotiate it down.

I'd probably say get the GTI just because I don't really like that year Si. Either would be good, but I'd rather have the extra hp of the VR6.

Both prices are too high!!

However, out of the two, I'd take the GTI
