Yes...it is 'planned maintenance' performed by the dealer and it doesn't have to be done obviously. However, if you intend to keep the M3's 100K powertrain warranty implemented by the infamous 'bearing failure' issue then you probably want to stick with their guidelines.

M5. It's a spacious comfortable 4,000lb four door cruiser that will do 0-60 in 4.5s and run 180mph flat out with the limiter off. Oh yeah, 5.0l V8 with individual throttle bodies that revs to 7000? Thats gotta make some beautiful noises when you uncork the intake and exhaust

cliff notes:

m3 because
- it looks a bit sexier as a coupe with more modern styling
- a bit more updated interior
- I6 w/ high revs
- want to stay young
- easier to find with lower mileage
- maintenance and mpg: if you are in this used car market, then these should not be a factor in your decision

m5 because
- it looks classic, subuded styling but still sexy in its own way
- more interior room and more trunk space
- v8 w/ grunt
- more grown up
- more value for the bucks because it tends to be older in yrs
- maintenance and mpg: if you are in this used car market, then these should not be a factor in your decision

Awesome points from both sides!!!!

The delimma of mine is the maintaince cost of M5 vs M3 I think.

Gas prices can go to hell, I will pay to play.

Plus I dont do much driving to work since I live pretty close by. So gas milage is the least concern between the two.

I think there is "prestige" with M5.... the charisma of its presence.... the mean look it has compared to the jolly look of the M3.

Plus I am 31 now, looking to get married and have kids in few years right?

btw, yes I am trading in my baby for it. If I was keeping the S, it would be easier to just pick M5 or a nicely used e39 540.

What other great 4 door sports sedan is there???? 2004 330i with ZHP seems to be on the weak side compared to the M's.....

Thats really a good point.

yes, in a used car market for the "M" cars, maintainance cost should be expected so in the end shouldnt be a factor.

So without that......

with out all other factors in such as gas milage and COST of ownership.

which one would you drive as your daily driver... you one and only car to drive... and I am soooo excited to even be able to drive an "M" car, my childhood dream.

I think I would choose M5 only due to the grown up look and rarity of existence. More space and power to boot.

however the driving dynamics will be more present in the M3 im sure.

ahhhhh decisions decisions.....

Whichever one includes the longer CPO coverage.

I'd say the ///M5 for sure. I like the E34 M3, but the rare factor would do it for me. Plus if you want kids, its easier to do car seats with 4 doors rather than 2.

Another point, profiling the previous owner.

M3 = younger owner

M5 = older owner

Thinking the M5 should have less chance of owner abuse? just a thought.
