I always wondered if that BMW V12 was bespoke for the McF1 or if had a lineage elsewhere? Did any other road/racecars use it or some close variant of it?
BMW made a bunch back in teh day, most notably the the 850.

I've read the whole article some years ago. The original article was in Japanese and translated to English via google language tool. I wish I still have the link.

I would honestly love to know on what grounds Honda refused. I wonder that being some new heads are looking down from the Honda perch that we could query and find out now?

Just speculating, but Honda seems to like making engines for their own vehicles, not for others. They also generally go for mass production products, at least more mass production than the McLaren ever was going to be.

I don't think Honda's engine could have been any sweeter, ex. perhaps for getting Honda fanbois all wet.

Very interesting. As others have said, I can see how Honda would pass. It would have been a new from the ground up engine for them. BMW was able to leverage an existing design. The BMW F1 motor was unique to the F1 but it was at least based in large part on an existing project thus keeping the R&D somewhat in check. Anyone know how much the BMW mill weighs?
