Default F1 and 2.0L S2K Engines

Here is a quote from an article on Wikipedia:

"A 2.4 litre Formula One engine at 19,000 rpm has a 25 m/s mean piston speed (2 × 39.7 mm × 19,000 rpm/60 s), the same value as the Honda S2000 engine (2 × 84 mm × 8,900 rpm/60 s). This value is typically limited by increasing intake port velocities and frictional losses, but is attained by commercial vehicle engines, like the Honda S2000, BMW E46 M3's S54B32 with 24.5 m/s as far back as 2001, the Audi RS4 with 24.2 m/s or the Yamaha YZF-R6 motorcycle with 23 m/s."

Formula One Engines

Would also be nice to have 300bhp per liter, naturally aspirated! Or a power band at a little more than twice the RPM we regularly experience. Mercy!

You have to remember that the FIA allows teams to go through a maximum of 8 engines per season, meaning every motor is built to last only a handful of races. Its nice to dream though isn't it ?

Would this be the same case with the AP2? Obviously it revs lower. But I've read somewhere that an AP2 @ 8k, has the same piston speed as an AP1 @ 9k. True?

Actually, did some more reading... and it seems an AP2 @ 8300 rpm has the same piston speed as an AP1 @ redline.

The s2000 could rev higher but on of the first major issues would be valve float. You could increase the valve spring pressure but you would lose power by creating more friction.

F1 cars utilize many tricks but one of the most important ones has been pneumatic valves

Also they are using Ti valves and Aluminum- beryllium pistons and coatings and now liner less blocks with dry coatings. And MMC bearing less rods at least at one point

15 years ago the hot topic was spherical valves that would have allowed 20K rpm small displacement motors with huge gains in mileage but sadly coates pissed away the tech

Wow, that's some insane engineering for just the valve operation.

Some interesting reading about the S here, including bits of engine info ... So Long S2000 (Gone but Never Forgotten) ... enjoyed seeing the engine cut-away image too.

@ Duke Togo: Interesting you should comment about shperical valves and provide the image. I was pondering an idea that was different than pictured, but still rotating not reciprocating. "... coates pissed away the tech ..." meaning they patented portions of the product but then failed to fully develop it, so it's useless for anyone to take it further as long as the tech is protected by patent?

It looks like all they ever have done with it is make harley engines and some farm equipment - the original design apparently ate through bearings until they went ceramic.

I don't know if it's too simple or the gas companies buried it or what happened but I think if an independent person produced something of there own design and approached the right company they could make it happen.

You can certainly make one for yourself to use, and you have to remember that even things like vtec weren't really Honda creation just there version of it.
