Default Insurance question...

Wasn;t too sure about this, so thought I'd ask. If I have "liability only" for one of my cars, and I need to get a rental (because that car was rear ended), will my insurance cover the rental insurance? I'm not talking about the cost of renting a car, but rather, do I have to get the Herts/enterprise/avis insurance? Or will my insurance cover the rental in case I get into an accident?

I thought I remember reading somewhere that in cali, your insurance will also provide insurance for a rental..just like, your new car will automaticaly be covered by your insurance company for the first 10 days or something...

generally, i always purchase the optional insurance coverage the rental company gives you because it's such a hassle to involve your own personal insurance in case something ever happens. if you do get into an accident while under the rental company's insurance, the rental company takes care of everything, leaving you out of the hassle. also, since it was the other driver's fault, his insurance company should be covering your rental car expense.

but to answer your question, yes your personal line of insurance should cover your rental.

It's company specific, most of the major insurance companies will cover your rental with the same policy that you have on your own car provided that your car is in a shop for repairs, not just renting for leisure use. Talk to your agent for specifics.

It should, but not always. I guess some of the finer details of insurance policy will different from state to state. There are so many rooms for the insurance claim department to say "no". And second, you will sign something with the rental company saying something like....."you will be responsible for the daily rental fee while its in repair, which I know your insurance will not cover. The best is to cover the repair.

It sounds like this has already happened, so I will save my time and not say what you should do when renting one. Your best bet right now is to claim it through the other insurance company....if they take responsibility. Maybe then will there be a small chance that they would take care of the daily rental fee. If you claim it through yours even though its not your fault, the conscience may catch up to you later.

If you decline your rental insurance, make sure to put it on your credit card.

Most credit card will cover what your insurance coverage lack. But every CC policy is different, so you should check the fine print in your CC policy.

thanks guys. As for ayemikey, we haven't rented one, nor have we got the estimates (still in early stages), but yeah, we're def. going with the "at fault's" insurer to cover rental fees (the other dude that hit us).

Good idea regarding CC. I totally forgot about that.

I'd go with the credit card too before I went with my personal car insurance.

In NY with my insurance company the rental coverage is an extra policy add-on with its own charge. I add it to the Titan's policy in the winter when I only have one vehicle on the road, then is the summer I take it off the Titan policy because I also have the CRX-Si and the S registered. I can't remember the fee, but for 6-months of coverage it is almost nothing. And, I have used it 3-times in the past several years because of deer and dumb asss tire mechanics...
