Can't blame him for that. Even if I end up dropping the S because of this whole baby thing, I can see myself picking up another one later on. It's just that good.

It seemed like a great car.

I was scared off by the small number of high pressure fuel pump problems. The problem is that when the fuel pump breaks down, it takes the rest of the fuel system down with it. Repairs run between $7000. and $10,000.

Here's the thread on the TDI forum.

If the car is still under warranty you shouldn't have a problem with Volkswagen paying for the repair if it happens.

I was planning on holding on to the car for a lot longer than the warranty period.
They issued a recall for this btw.

Sounds like they UNDER-engineer their cars.

My best friend has a 2010, he paid top dollar for it and has no regrets. I can attest it has bags of torque, gets high 30's mpg, and is very practical. It is a gem.

There maybe better family haulers out there, but this car is a good buy.

There was an issue with the stereo/nav system and the bluetooth for streaming music...he just did a recall with VW as they apparently issues many different systems with the cars he bought and thus has several different features. its all sorted out now

Personally I love them, the TDIs have proven to be a reliable drivetrain all things considered, the rest of the car is typical VW (oh look, my window fell into my door, that kind of stuff). That said, I'd still love to pick one up and see how many miles I can put on one.

"small number" of high pressure pump failures is right. Ive worked at VW for over 2 years now, and my dealer has seen ZERO TDI HPFP failures.

I'm kind of late to to this but here's my 2 cents. I had a 2000 Golf TDi so it was an older version and there have been major updates since.

I averaged right at 48 mpg over the time I owned the car. I put roughly 100,000 miles on it and sold with 200,000 miles on the clock. The seat was no longer comfortable and somewhere around 190,000 miles I did have a window fall down into the door. It still used no oil, had the clutch that was in it when I bought it, and it never left me stranded. I could drive it hard or easy and still run 600+/- miles between fuel stops. Any VW work was expensive, ie: timing belt, oil change, brake parts, and one of the local dealerships tired to sell me $1000 to $1500 extra service anytime I stopped in. When the other local dealer was told about this they offered me a discount on parts and labor and generally took very good care of me.

Bottom line, there is a lot I miss about the car. I would not be afraid to own another one.
