uh 250 is fine. But my suggestion is to go and get a USED 250. you can get one for about $1500 in good condition and the resale, you'll probably get the same amount back. Just sell it and upgrade in 1 year. I guarentee you'll be a better rider for it. I think if you start off on a lighter bike, it'll be easier to learn. After all, you can have the best bike but it all depends on the rider.
My first bike was an "86 250 Ninja. I rode that thing for 12,000 miles the first year and learned ALOT.

Buy used, drop it a couple of times, learn the basic and then decide if motorcycling is for you. Don't forget to get properly license or at the very least a proper permit.

Good Luck.

Spuxy, try Cycle Trader (magazine or on-line access).

I started on a Suzuki Katana 600. Fairly affordable bike for a 600cc. You won't need to upgrade for a while, whereas a 250cc or 500cc you may out grow quick, in fact I guarantee you will. As always respect the bike, because learning to ride on a 11 sec 1/4 mile 600cc can get you in trouble fast.
