Default looking at 2 ZX6R's

So i just sold my Ninja 250R after putting 3000 miles on it and i am looking to upgrade and i really like zx6r's. I have 2 in mind and i am looking to be informed by you guys on these because i really dont have much knowledge on them yet. 1 Option is a 2007 with around 9000 miles and the following mods: bmc race filter, powercomander, race rails, fender eliminator kit for $5000. My second option is a 2008 with 0 miles for 7600 OTD. I am having a really hard time trying to figure out which is the best way to go. What kind of maint should i be lookin at with a bike with around 9K on it and what should i look for and so on. any insight would be helpful thanks guys.

I have a cousin who has a Zx6r dude its a whole new world on that thing. I would go look at that new bike again and ask to see the manual with scheduled maintenance... when looking glance at what work is required for a bike with 9k miles and see whats coming up.

nothing wrong with buying a used bike as long as its been taken care of.

find someone who knows about bikes and have them go with you when you check it out.

if not then make sure to check the little things like:

- basic drivability, shift and accelerate smoothly, turning etc
- scraps on the pegs, bar ends, levers, mirrors, case covers, rims, etc. if you see any then it can clue you in that it may have been dropped before.
- check the oil level and color.
- check the tires.
- check the brakes, feel and the pads.
- check the chain- look for rust, make sure it flows smoothly
- check the shocks - probably ok with only 9k but check the front for oil leaks (this is caused by dropping the front doing wheelies)

there are other things but these are just a few that u should be able to check easily. i will add more, when i think about it more =)

if your planning on mods then go for the second hand one.

ive got on 05 ZX6R

most models have similar maint schedules. i think 12000 u should be looking for semi-serious service and new chain/sprockets. serious service @ 22-24k miles to check valve clearances

soz to plug another forum but its not a rival, www.ninja6zone.com im on, really big community and youll get a very experienced answer within a day

the last bike i got i knew it had been dropped before but after pulling the plastics i found that one of the radiator mounts were snapped. so remember to check under the plastics also. you can also tell if the plastics have been repaired from the inside also. as far as maintenance, usually besides what has been previously mentioned, the chain and sprockets are a good thing to look at. make sure they are in good shape. they are fairly easy to replace but should give you more leverage in price.

If you dont mind paying the extra for the 08, I would go that route. Just because its brand new and you don't have to worry about what the previous owner has done to it. You just have to worry about breaking it in properly.

If you are considering the 05 I would say have a friend that knows about bikes check it out with you. Atleast you would have your opinion and your friends opinion. Oh and if you do end up buying it first thing I would do is check the map on the power commander.

I bought a 08 ZX6R brand new and loved it. I cant compare it to the 05 since I never rode one.

Thats my .02 cents. Good luck with finding a bike and ride safe.

if you can hold on to your 250 for a few more months, do it; buy in the winter and sell in the summer to save some major $$$.

For reference, I bought a clean 07 zx6r w/ 1800 miles in december for 4800 shipped to my door.

If you're debating between an 07 vs 08, the only differences are (1 kawi addressed a valve gasket leak tsb that a few early 07s suffered from and 2) additional color schemes.

A pc3 is great, but whichever one you buy, make sure to do the 'jumper mod'

The '07's have a Technical Bulletin released in regards to an oil leak from the valve cover (left side). Some dealers do it free of charge, some ask you to help cover the cost as it's not a full recall. It may be worth snagging the VIN and asking your local kawi dealer if the service has been performed.

That being said, I have ~18k on mine with almost zero issues. The valve covers leaked after the valves were adjust. Dealer covered it.
