Thank you for that report!!!

It's pretty much down to the the Pathfinder and QX4.
2001 seems much nicer for either of them. But maybe I'll end up with something like a 1998. I don't think I would get a Pathfinder older than 01, though.

Ordinarily I would have recommended the regular Cherokee in the model years you are looking at. I have had two friends put over 200,000 relatively trouble free miles on those things. They are, however ridiculously easy to steal. I am not sure if in the last model years they went to a starter disable system, but the whole steering column on most model years dates back to the 70's and they can be started by a thief post haste.

Early model grand cherokees are cheap and have the same engine as others have stated. Early 4-runners with 22re four cyl are indestructible but get really rusty.
