Default Mazda RX8

My friend had one that had an automatic transmission ... didn't care too much for it since my s2k out handled/out ran the rx8 in all aspects. But now i'm reading about the manual transmission version and it seems like the manual one has 250hp with 159 torque .. This isn't a comparison but, what are your thoughts on the RX8? I'm thinking about picking one up since they are so damn cheap now. (fully loaded ones are shy of 12k for 2004)

250HP RX-8?

You have about 6 years of catching up to do.

Happy reading.

go on clubrx8.com (or rx8club.com) and read about them...first year (2004) usually has a ton of issues, from the engine flooding, eating oil, getting absolute crap MPG (applies for all model years), etc.

most thread in rx8 general forum had newbies complaining about those issues since they didn't expect them to come with a new car

IMO an engine that eats oil and gasoline like no tomorrow and traps mid 90's in the 1/4 isn't justifiable. I mean it handles nice and the chassis has good balance, and the interior and exterior both look pretty killer (i've driven 3 6spd rx8s), but the reliability and lack of performance keep me away from this car.

to my understanding these issues become less pronounced as model year progressed, sans the oil eating/crappy MPG issues

now, IB zx-7 or zx-10 or whatever his ID is

rotaries for life.

its been discussed alot on here.. From what i have read the engine is not as reliable as the s or as loud. Also the s will out run it in a straight line. I have heard the rx8 is a little easier to handle in terms of power slides.. i like them but i would much prefer an s..

The manual ones usually put down 180rwhp. That should tell you how much it has at the crank. It usually runs mid 14s @ 96mph in the 1/4mi.

overall good car, between a rx8 and a S2000 i would go with a S anyday. stock VS stock i believe a S is far superior. my friend also has a auto RX8 very slow compared to my S but since the auto RX8 has less HP and redline dropped i can see how i was a lot faster. but the only downs i can think of the rx8 is i dont really prefer the interior of the early rx8 and how tacky the inside looks, but the major downfall of the rx8 is in MPG. te fuel economy of the car is very low, my friend runs through gas like crazy and doesnt have a lead foot but still mpg is low. overall its a great 4 seater with handling close to s2k with a "special" rotary engine. overall if you have the $$ and like the looks of the rx8 i would say why not. the cars handling with the 6spd should be a joy to drive compared to the auto version.

The auto makes about 160rwhp, so it is slow. I like the RX8 very much. It's very balanced and well-handling car, albeit not powerful, plus it has 2 little seats in the back.

What is the purpose of the car? DD, then yes? If you want it to be something like the s2k then no.

I was seriously considering the RX-8.

The mileage and reliability got to me though. I wouldn't mind poor mileage as long as the performance is worth it, but it's not in the RX-8.

Not to mention, I lurked on the RX-8 forums for a while and their mileage varies a lot, on this forum everyone's gas mileage is somewhat consistent...on the RX-8 forum it was all over the map...to me, that says something about the unreliability of the engine.
