Default modena and 911 (996) questions

Modena: why are some 360 modena's in the 120k range while others can be as much as 100k more? i've always wondered this

Porsche: what is the difference (if any) b/w a 911 and a 996.

Sorry if these questions seem elementary, but they have been bugging me. Thanks

996 is a generation of 911s, kind of like the "MY00-04" of S2000s.

Modena prices (and fluctuations) have to do with supply and demand along with a good chunk of buyer impatience. As it stands there are more interested buyers of 360 Modena's then there are 360 Modenas. Sellers recognize this and will adjust the selling price accordingly to their own (selfish) desires. Ferrari N.A. will not allow their dealers to sell for over MSRP (on new car purchases...used cars are fair game). The catch is you'll have to wait 3-5 years to be delivered. Many decide to just go into the used car market and purchase a Ferrari for say 30k over sticker and get it immediately as opposed to waiting for your allocation and paying MSRP. Location also has an impact on price as their are more potential buyers in California than say Idaho so on average you will be able to charge more in places where there is above-average demand just as you will be able to charge less in markets with below-average demand.

Hope this helps answer your question

i believe there are at least three versions of the 360...the modena, the spyder, and the challenge. so that is part of the price diff.

the spyder is so nice. i'd consider giving up a pinky for one

Some modena's are made for U.S. market (much more expensive), some are made for european market but they can be imported and sold for less because they must pass some mechanical inspection and DOT and fuel emissions (10K-15K$ to get it legal here). That's a reason why european version are being sold for less..You can check asamcars.com !

Exactly, the grey market cars are the ones that sell for the least. However it turns out there are virtually no changes needed to sell a Ferrari from Europe here in the states, it's just that there is still that stigma of it being imported.

Ferrari was trying to prevent these cars from being sold here but a judge ruled that because there are no significant changes made for the US Spec cars the grey market cars can be sold here.

The other major issue is obviously age and mileage. You can now get 360s that are 4 years old. Although Ferraris hold their value extremely well, they are vehicles that require maintenance and a 4 year old exotic is going to need some expensive routine work do on it.
