Modern Exhaust Notes
I really liked the sound of my Alfa GTV6. It had Ansa downpipes and an Ansa sport exhaust. The back pressure out the muffler could knock you over if the flames coming out the back didn't sear you! The Busso V6 has a legendary sound.
Most exhausts on NA s2000s sound like garbage, but with the addition of a turbo it sounds great.
I was at the track this past weekend and IMO one of the best sounding cars out there was a race prepped S2000 with a single exhaust. Not sure what type of engine work it had but it sounded great. In contrast 1-2 of the (many) Mustangs there had very low restriction exhausts and sounded horribly crude.

I don't get the love for MB turbo V8's? A buddy has E550 Renntech chip/exhaust and it does not sound that great at all. The Renntech exhaust is very deep with virtually no growl or bark, just a deep deep bartone. Granted the exhaust only has 1K miles on it. Figure for 550+ HP would sound awesome, but doesn't sound like much of anything.
To reply to the OP I disagree, I think we have a lot of awesome sounding engines these days, and more options than ever for "Sport Exhausts" with their bypass valves & actuators.
Were you at the F1 race this past weekend? (if so, kudos I'm jealous). Every video I can find online they sound good, and every auto magazine article about them says the new AMG turbo V8 sounds great, so I dunno what to say. I haven't personally driven one or ridden in one, but the consensus seems to be that they're pretty good.
We drove the Lotus (300 mi each way) and it was furthest I ever drove the car in one stretch.
AMG had a big sponsorship and advertising campaign throughout the fan pavilion. I saw Vettel riding his road bicycle on Sunday morning with someone else (not Kimi). They stopped a stop sign like 20' away from me. Compare any AMG to an Aston or sporty 911 and it's no contest. Never mind a Ferrari... Maybe inside the car it's a little different?
