This might have been the case with older cars but I wouldn't do it with the newer cars.

What Hustn said makes sense with the use I heard for mothballs - cheap octane boost. I would hesitate to recommend it as a mileage and power booster, however.

Some paint thinners are mostly toluene, which is an aromatic, and functions as an octane booster. Buying little bottles of octane boost at the gas station is probably fine once in a while, but if my daily driver required 100 octane, I'd buy some toluene.

"points points"...someone took inorganic/organic chem...;-)...HAHAHAH

anyways, i don't know what's the primary hydrocarbon component of gasoline is and i don't know what the ocatane rating is actually measuring so i can't say...

but so your suggesting that the moth balls is increasing the octane rating by adding more benzene rings and/or alkanes (saturated hydrocarbons with primary carbons)?

well in the dichlorobenzene..........Cl is a leaving group and it can also be a free radical so at least i guess u have the potential of adding extra "products" into your gas. Since it could react with the hydrocarbons in the fuel, and depending on what the metals (catalyst) are in your engine.......

A friend of mine used to stick them in a old Suzuki GS350. Definitly had an effect, as the exhaust was glowing cherry red after a few minutes. I wouldn't try it with the S. The old Suzuki was worth more as scrap than a motorcycle.

So it does work.

But Clorine will be released, and corrode our engines.
