I'm a name brand whore so I will def. go for either a Shoei or Arai depending on how they fit. Everyone tells me fit is #1 since both brands of helmets are DOT and SNELL approved. I beleive you are also paying a lot for the paint scheme on the helmet and the overall weight.

/\ don't quote me on any of this since i'm new at this too.

I've worn Shoei and Arai, but prefer Arai. Think it just fits my head better. Been through 4 of them. Expensive, though. Haven't tried recent brands like SUOMY.

Look for fit, comfort, weight, quality of finish and quietness at speed. Best if you can try your friend's so you don't have to pay for your trial-and-error.

Can't go wrong with either Arai or Shoei but really depends on which fits your head better. Also take into consideration cost, ventilation, weight, and aerodynamics. I can only speak for Arai and Shoei which are on the expensive side and like both. I've noticed that Shoei helmets have better peripheral view compared to Arai. Arai Corsair below has washable moisture wicking liner and probably the most vents of any helmet out there, it even has visor vents. You also want a helmet with air foils to reduce drag at speed. In the end, choose whatever brand fits your budget and head the best.

I have to second the opinion that Shoei makes a nice helmet. Bargains can be had 'though. I bought a brand new, in the box, Shoei RF800 awhile back for $85 on eBay.

I won't wear any helmet without a Snell rating. Snell ratings come out every 5 years. When the Snell 2005 comes out next year, you'll find some great deals on the left over Snell 2000s.

I have a Shoei RF-1000, fits pretty good. Then I recently bought a new helmet, OGK. This thing is LIGHT! The weight difference is huge compared to the rf-1000. It has more vents than the shoei and I can actually feel the air circulating through the helmet, unlike my shoei. Very quality built helmet IMO. Have not tried suomy or arai yet either (not too thrilled about arai graphics, but I'm sure they are very quality helmets).

I run a Suomy Spec 1-R.
What helmet you get has everything to do with your mellon.
For example- My mellon does not feel right in ARAI, no matter what I do...

A buddy of mine can't get his mellon to feel right in a ARAI or Suomy, however found the Shoei X-11 and it fit him like a glove.

What ever you do...DON"T BE CHEAP... you will end up spending $150-$250 on a piece of crap, only to discover you hate it...and kick yourself for wasting the money!

Arai, RX7 for summer and a Quantum E for winter.

The RX7 gives good airflow around the head but the Quantum E is warmer and quieter in the colder weather.

I really like my race KBC VR-1. I have been using it for racing. Fits really nice. Removable lining. SNELL and DOT. Cheap, but not cheaply made (IMO)

Otheriwse I REALLy like my SUOMY also. Bostrom replica

I have had shoei's in the past also. really good helmet.
