Default MR2 vs S2000

Now i am a true believer that the RX-7 and S2000 are brothers from another mother just that the S was born second. The fact that both handel extremely well and do great on the track course made me think (at first) which should i have upgrade to. It hit me an decided to choose the S2000 but after more and more research the MR2(SW20) came along too and some of its special charastics started to show me that maybe the MR2(SW20) could be up there with the S and possibly the RX-7. Tell me what you guys think about this...about the MR2(SW20) for the track against an S, stock or modified?

MR2 FTW!

And for those days when you really want to burn it up... a 1979 Sirocco!

The MR as well as the FD/FC would do pretty well against an S2000 on the track but when you say which should you upgrade to leads me to think you are looking for advice on which one of these to buy, I'd say the S2000 just because it's newer, it cost about the same as an FD, and way easier to maintain.

mr2's are fast but its handling is not up to par with the S. the weight is the biggest factor against the sw. however they can be easily modified for more power and there is alot of support for aftermarket parts still...

fyi: I might be on the way to buy a 3rd sw just because its affordable and because of boost...

Mr2 can be made very fast very cheap. If you go this route, get the 93 or newer because there was a suspension upgrade that reduces its proclivity to snap oversteer and 93 was the first year of LSD.

Steering has good road feel but is not nearly as light as S2000 and electro/hydrolic assist.

Hard to work on. And the availability of new stocks parts can be a problem in the future. Several years ago I tried to order a couple interior bits that were already out of production.

Not really that heavy, about the same as the honda but easier to drop wieght with body parts like front hood because it is steel and fairly heavy.

I love that car though and even prefer its looks to the S2000. Just got tired of doing work on mine at 122,000 miles because yes, it is tough. If they started making them new, I would buy one over my S2000 in a heartbeat.

The MR2 is midengined, but I think the s2000 handles better. I have stock versions of both cars and the s2000 turns a lot better. Don't let the MR2's small size fool you; the car is heavy, over 3000lbs.

As for RX-7s, they cost a lot for a used car, and most people sell it only because the car is starting to break down from abuse

That's me 100%. Love my S2, but I'm on my 4th MR2. And I doubt I'll ever buy another front-engined car ever again after this one.

In reality, a 2008 Lotus Elise is a 2008 MR2 (sans Toyota practicality).

A 2008 MR2 with the 2ZZ-GE which was never offered on the standard MR2 Spyder.

The 2nd Gen MR2 was a fantastic car and I have many great memories of my 93 (hence my screen name). The JDM MR2 and S2000 are identical in performance stock for stock. I love the interior and the t-tops. If you can get a clean one, jump on it!! It's a gem!

Sadly the SW20 went from old to very old. There are some DD's out there still trucking, but it'll never be like a 1-8 year old s2000 outside of a project/track car. It's also heavy, about the same as the s2000 without the open chassis as an excuse.

Although the MR-S looks goofy as hell, it handles very well, with coilovers it seems to throw away everything you thought you knew about cars. They weigh 2100lbs stock. The fastest cornering car I've ever ridden in was a 00 2zz MR-S with about 3 grand in suspension.

sw20 is 28xx lbs just like the s2000 IIRC. i had an 91 and my friend has an 93. the biggest difference in handling is obviously 1) steering feel and 2) 40/60% f/r weight distribution of the mr2.

the tail happiness esp. in the pre 93 mr2 makes it quite difficult to get cornering down in the car. and though the 3sgte is quite capable and even the USDM mr2 turbo with simple MBC/FCD/TBE can handily beat the s2000 in a straight line, the car is way too old to be reliable IMO. my friend's 93 gave him all kinda hell you can think of (yes it's a bit of bad luck involved too)...my 91 was great in the big picture (didn't have rod bearing failure like my friend's 93) but had oil leaks/bad alternator and eventually the hose from hell issue.
