Default The new 328i

i was lucky enough to attend a new BMW drive event, the 2.0 (240 hp)turbo car and the 335i turbo car.

The 328 i was a base car that costs almost 35000, i mean base, it had nav but no sport suspension or seats or paddles. I am told they make 94% of them with automatics per the BMW expert on hand. It was quick, yes, for a 4 cyl, 2.0 it was quick. My guess is this new 3 series which is almost as large as the last 5 series, goes 0-60 in close to 6 seconds with an automatic. It was a nice car for about 30,000? About 255 lbs of torque, I like Torque.

The new 335i (300 hp)with all the bells and whistles is about 54,000, auto, sunroof, sport, nav, idrive, etc....it really goes. So it also really handles as well,my guess is that 0-60 is 5.5 seconds give or take. It was an auto with paddles.

These car are chock full of electronics and auto this and that. The raw feeling is not there, sure they are fast adn handle well, but they are large and without the options just plain as day.

So, what has happened to the agile drivers car that is a sport sedan....I did not find it. I found a large car with lots of bells and a high price tag that went and handled, looks great, and it not very attractive to me as a package.

MPG is up on both models. It took a long time to get to the 335 as they only had one.

I know this may sound like I am being a biased fanboy of the S2000, but I had access to my brother's 335i for 2 months ( he broke his foot and couldn't drive stick so he swapped for my Accord) and I only drove it a handful of times in the two + months I had it. He has a manual too.

It is ridiculously fast, it just pulls effortlessly. But, it is dull and is just missing that connected feeling to the car. It really left me wondering what the hell I am going to do to replace the S. It feels so isolated and full of electronics and gadgets that I constantly felt like something was missing. The brake feel was simply incredible though, I wish the Honda had brake feel like that.

I think an M3 is the only step I can take in BMW land. 335i is too soft for me. Going into it I was really excited and was honestly shocked after a few hours behind the wheel that it just let me down.

In a sense it is an awesome car, it's quiet, fast as Sh1t, luxurious but didn't feel like a sports sedan to me. It was my first time with serious seat time in a BMW, and people always say they are driver's cars, but if that is a driver's car than my S2000 is god's chariot.

Lol. Boxster Spyder is pretty much your only option then I suppose.

328 with the 8 speed automatic does 0-60 in 5.4 seconds, quarter mile in 13.9.

They are fast, no doubt. Just a tune away from from the 4's.

Published times have already been released for both the 328 and 335 models. The 328 is only a few tenths slower than the 335 but the real surprise (or mystery?) is that the new 335 is noticeably slower than the previous generation model. Reviews have also shown that the steering feel is inferior to the previous model, nevermind the controversial styling.

I think Car and Driver put it best when they said if they were out looking to buy a new BMW 3 series they would search around for a 2012 335i still hanging around on dealer lots. That would be the E90, not the F30.

The new F30 328i has a really impressive motor, with a mild tune they are putting down 300/300 to the wheels. I personally like all the interior updates and bells and whistles and the car has a ton of interior room. Great for a daily but not acceptable for a sports car substitute. I would still save the $ and get a mid 20's CPO E90/E92 and get a tune and boltons for 400+ whp and 450+ wtq. If you think the 335 is fast on the 7 psi you should drive one with 17 pounds of boost.

Cars are expensive these days, even a top of the line Accord is 32K.

The 3 series chassis really wakes up when you start modding it. I have had 2 E92 335's so far, but the new F30 I don't care for as much. BMW is going for a broader market now with this car.

Out of curiosity, why do you say that? I think BMW has been making cars that appeal to the masses for 10 + years now.

The 328 could be my next car as the S2000 has to go soon, but just curious because I really like this car from what I am reading. Good gas mileage, tune away from being pretty quick, and good weight distribution which is a plus for me.
