One For The Porsche Experts
Go TT or GT3. Real good deals on them now.
They have the cases you'd want, and don't have the issues described above.
I've had an 04 996 that was absolutely problem free.
I now have an 03 TT. Once you try that, you'll have to have the turbos.
GT3 is committed and not for everyone.

holy rip, and people bag on FDs...not "godly" Porsches

RMS leaks were a real issue w/ the 9X6's, but seem to be close to non-existent on the 9x7's. 9x7's can suffer from oil ingestion during hard cornering, and it's not unheard of for them to produce a plume of smoke around hard corners (note that Porsche does not recommend running slicks on the Cayman, and I presume non-GTx/TT 911's, for this reason). At least one, if not more, S2000's are having the same problem at Harris Hill Road.
A friend of mine has a very nicely prepped Cayman S that he tracks extensively. It has intake, exhaust, reflashed ECU, plenun, KW V3's, BBK, GT3 seats w/ harness bar and 5 pt. belts, etc. - in other words, there's no mistaking it for a track bitch. He blew his engine at the track, and Porsche overnighted him an engine from Germany via FedEx no questions asked. I'd expect very few other mfgs. would do that given the mods that were on the car - they had to unbolt and replace a lot of aftermarket stuff to get the engine replaced.
As mentioned already, the GT2, GT3, and TT motors have cases derived from the old air-cooled engines, and are race worthy. The 987 engines are still very solid, but there is a risk of failure w/ extended high lateral forces. I never worried about it, since such failures are isolated and Porsche seems to stand behind them.
I wouldn't buy a 9x6 other than a GT3 or TT, but wouldn't lose any sleep over a 9x7 unless perhaps bought for extensive, hard track use - and that would be expensive in a Porsche even if nothing breaks.

2000 M Roadster. Weak welds caused the diff to tear from the subframe.
2002 M3 Engine recall.
2002 Z8 Aluminum shocktower spreading. Car is one pothole from being totaled. BMW offered a kit to reinforce, for thousands of dollars.
I'll never own another BMW.
I would buy another Porsche, but not an older 996.
Question guys,
What's this rear main seal leaking issue?
I have no tech knowledge with the P-cars and would love to learn some from you guys.
Also, is RMS issue = rear main seal issue?
hkspwrsche's post shows them as a different issue.
