performance comparisons are useless
As the title says, this is a thread to display my disgust with the whole concept of automotive comparisons by price range, etc. Any given car may be classified(technically, and loosely speaking) with another car, but an accurate comparison of the two is almost always virtualy impossible. in certain cases where the two cars were cross-designed to compete directly( E55/M5) then i can see it. but even then, one is offered with a manual and the other isn't. I just dont see why it matters for one car to be marginally faster, marginally better around a skidpad, etc. Shouldn't it be about how it makes you feel when you get behind the wheel?
For me it's about feel, not statistics. Driving a stock S2000 feels faster than any other car I've driven, including the 330 WHP turbo Integra Type R a friend of my parents owns. Surely that car is faster in a straight line and since he's loaded he's got it decked out with every Mugen suspension modification, including those $700 MF-10 wheels, it'd probably spank an S2000 on a road or Auto-X too. But I feel faster in the S.
I don't know, maybe you guys are hard number-crunchers but seriosuly, all this WRX Sti vs. Evo 8 and S2000 vs. Cobra crap needs to end. drive them both. like the Sti more? is it slower? who cares? Buy which makes you feel more like a hero, and the rest of the dissidents be damned.

uhhh the evo vs. sti debate is a huge ongoing thing. I know which one i'm going to buy and which one I like better, but posting a good comparo regarding one of the most heated car rivalries shouldn't "disgust" you
It's really not feasible for the average person to drive every car before deciding on what they want. Thus, we rely on magazines and web site reviews and comparisons to narrow the choices down to a few (which is how I ended up with an S2000 and not a Boxster). If you have the means to test drive an Sti and Evo8 back to back, go for it, but if not read the reviews and decide which one you think you'd prefer...
Mag racing may be dumb but is the first "line of attraction" to a car. Most of us take test drives before we buy but very few of us get to live with a car for any real time before deciding. So you'd be a fool to ignore available write-ups too. Besides, when you see 1+ seconds of 0-60 difference, or 1/2 sec in the 1/4 mile, you know it is real enough that, yes, car A is indeed faster than car B.
