I could write a passage on this, as a specialist in viral marketing and social engineering, but meh, I can't be arsed. Suffice it to say that the problem is that these companies (due to the average age of management, and techno-awareness), do not realise the power available to the average internet user, nor that the 'average' internet user is far more clued in than they are. Simple side effect of generation gaps. Until they start employing younger people in marketing, this will continue to happen. Also, deon't think that other companies aren't doing it, they just haven't been caught yet. It's so common in the RC world (RC manufacturer X comes to a forum and promotes their product, pretending to be an average Joe who bought one, then someone notices that they are affiliated, derision ensues, blah blah, but it's not even embarrassing dfor the MFR anymore, as it's become so common. They just think to themselves 'Ah well, busted, next.', rinse and repeat on another forum, or with another screen name).

Yep. If you engage in social media, as a business, you better understand the crap out of it first.
