Exactly what I was going to say.

My friend bought a CPO'd HSE from the era that BMW's guts were in them and he has had no problems in the 4 years of ownership (so far.......... )
I would have to say that I agree with that. The BMW engine was rock solid, however the V8 in my car was bulletproof as well (it was the 4.4 Ford). For us the issues were all aspects of the car (other than the engine) that were controlled by a computer.

yes, yes, yes, the newer ones are worst than the older ones, so says my authorized land rover mechanic, who charges me $80 an hour for labor.

did i read air suspension somewhere, those things go bad frequently enough that there are conversion kits to switch back to regular spring suspension.

The 06+ Jaguar-engined models have been completely reliable for us, the 03 that we had (with BMW engine) had a problem where the ignition randomly wouldn't turn for most of the time that we had it. Even though the engine changed from a BMW unit, many of the parts in the newest ones are still the same BMW-engineered bits that were on the earlier models if that is a plus to you.

My wife's '06 RR HSE has been mechanically sound. Just a couple niggling issues like the voice recognition system. It's beautiful, rugged, luxurious, and drives great. She would take a bullet for it

No issues on my 08 LR3 after almost 30K miles. I've been looking at upgrading to a '10 RR Sport Supercharged. Despite what some are saying the Sports are almost as large inside as the LR3 - which makes sense since they're built on the same platform. (I actually measured b/c I actually use the LR3 to haul stuff around). You lose about 6 inches in total length and 3, (I think) in height at the tailgate due to the different body design. You also lose the 3rd row of seats in the LR3.

Still haven't decided to switch yet - may check out an LR4 which has numerous interior upgrades (and 75 hp more) over the 3.

decisions decisions...

I'm thinking of paying 3ks or so less getting one wiht 10ks more miles at about 55ks miles and using that 3k price diff btw a 55k car and a 45k mile car and getting extended warranty from the factory.

I've owned a series II Discovery, a first year (05) LR3 and currently have an 08 LR3 HSE.

The RR Sport is really an LR3 whereas the "real" range rover is different so the comparison is valid here. The advantage of the LR3 is the ability for 7 seats -- all of which will fit a real adult but the interior is a bit shabbier I suppose.

The warranty and free services on the cars is great and at least with our dealership LR East of Denver the loaners are always clean and the services are performed quickly.

The 01 Series II once had a MAF go bad. The 05 had zero issues and the current HSE has had one issue involving the drivers seat memory which frustratingly works perfectly for my wife but does seemingly random shit every time I use my key.

Fuel consumption is shit -- duh -- this is a large SUV. The thing towed a 6000 pound sailboat into the mountains like a champ.

In a couple of years the 08 will be replaced with the new 375hp LR4.

I quote my friend that works at JD Power: "You can't buy a bad car today. Except a Land Rover."
