Default Replacing A/C Compressor Costs

On my beater (97 accord), the refrigerant leaked out. I brought it in to the shop to get the refrigerant recharged, but then it started vibrating. The shop said it was because of the pressure from the refrigerant and the fact the the clutch assembly and compressor were wearing out.

To replace the compressor they are quoting $920. Is that reasonable?

Reasonable? Only you can answer that question. $920 for replacing and recharging a new A/C compressor would be normal. I would not like to pay that amount, but I don't think they are screwing you. However, if the compressor only needs a clutch, much of the time you can purchase the clutch separate from the compressor, but labor could become more expensive because they would then have to install the clutch on the orginal compressor.

Ok, so $920 would not be an outrageous quote... thanks!

And it makes sense that a worn out clutch assembly would result in vibrating/rattling?

Yes, a worn or faulty clutch would cause a vibration/rattling.

Edit: You could also call around different parts outlets and get an estimate on the compressor so you can compare those prices with the shop where your Accord is getting the work performed.
