Thumbs up S2000 VTEC vs Other Hondas

Hey guys,

This might sound silly, but after watching many video's and seeing a couple of my friends' Honda SiRs, Integra's, and Civic's, I've noticed when the VTEC kicks in, its pretty damn loud and the revs jump pretty quickly. On the other hand, when I watch videos of people's S2000's, the VTEC seems rather quiet, and the revs don't seem as 'violent' as other Honda's. Is the VTEC mananged or programmed differently in S2000's compared to other Honda's/Integra's? Or do I really have to see an S2000 in person in order to judge my opinion?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, there are several types of Honda VTEC. I think Wikipedia actually has a good write up on them.

I do hear other cars' vtec's kick-in feels stronger. It's all relative though.

Yea, I thought that was just me. I've never been in a S2000 before, but SiR's almost jolt in you the seat when you downshift and the vtec instantly kicks in. Has anyone drivin a S2000 and another Honda that can tell me how different they are?

In a ap1 it hits like a hammer and u can definitely tell especially with exhaust.
With an ap2, the vtec engagement is a whole lot smoother.

Even S2000's vary in the amount of extra push you feel as VTEC engages. The earliest cars ran a little rich, and have a dip in the torque just before VTEC, and while the dip isn't enough to feel, it does make the VTEC engagement more obvious. For MY02 the fuel maps were revised, and the transition is smoother, but still quite obvious. With the F22C, the engagement is smoother, and it *might* be smoother still in the latest cars (though it's really too close to call with certainty).

I can't compare to any other Honda's, beause all the other Honda's I get to drive are heavily modified. However, you can see the torque increase of any of the engines in their dyno plots. Calculate the thrust from the torque to see how much thrust jumps with the Honda's you're interested in. That will be much better than just trusting subjective evaluations.

I suspect that FWD/RWD has a major effect on how the torque increase feels, and for that reason wouldn't put any faith in subjective "measurements."

One thing to factor is...are those other Hondas/Acuras JDM motors?

I had a H22A1 (usdm Prelude vtec motor) & a H22a (Jdm Prelude vtec motor), and the difference between the two were night and day. Especially in terms of vtec engagement. Might have something to do with the higher compression ratio on the jdm motors.

Also it would be hard to gauge the thrust of vtec engagement on a s2k speedo seeing that it's a digital readout, as oppose to the regular speedo where it's easy to see the needle jump every which way.
