Default Self Storage Unit Parking

Has anyone ever stored a car in a self storage unit? A car you weren't going to drive for a few months. Was the car insured while it was stored?

Yes...it sat there for years actually and it was uninsured...but probably not the smartest move should a hurricane have come and blown the building down.

Well I did it for 6-years...

Let me just say, that was never the plan, but that is the way it just worked out. After a change in lifestyle I went back to an apartment, in a small village where I wanted to buy a house. I was in the storage unit for 6-years because I was very picky in choosing a house to buy.

When I started using this unit it was for my '90 CRX-Si, after I got the S I moved my CRX-Si out to my parents home for a while. Now I have about 550 sq-ft of space in my own garage and I'm no longer renting.

During the spring/summer/fall months when the cars were on the road they of course carried full insurance. During the winter monts of not driving they only carried comprehensive. I would never own a vehicle that did not at least have comprehensive coverage.

One of my closest S2000 guys locally has also used a rent-a-storage-cell for his S. He lives in a townhouse with only one garage, and as the S is his 2nd car he too needed a space. He has been renting that space since 2003 with no issues at all.

Good luck finding a space that is clean, dry and at a good price.

Thanks guys, if I buy an S in Nevada as planned next week I'm looking at leaving it in Arizona for at least 2 months. I'm also considering just having it shipped up here to Seattle.

And I agree it should be insured but my insurance said they would cancel the insurance if the car wasn't registered here in Washington by March 1st.

Any advice on that? What kind of prices are out there? I have a classic car that's a driver and sits outside, but I don't really touch it during the Texas summer because it doesn't have A/C. Storage might be interesting, but I have no idea what it runs or what problems there might be.

Did it for years as he did, for my motorcycles. Really no big deal, I'd just try and find one that has 24 hour access.

Make sure the insurance company knows all you want is COMPREHENSIVE coverage.
Honestly, if they don't offer just that, I would find another insurance company.

- Prices are going to vary dramatically based upon location
- Call up possible places and simply tell them you need to look at the space you would be renting, before you sign a rental agreement
- I like to go see places right after a hard rain or while it is raining, this will tell you about how dry it is
- Find someplace really close to where you live, otherwise it becomes a big hassle
- 24-hour access is key
- Extra security like a fence around the complex is nice but not a manditory
- Buy a really good lock made for outdoor use, don't buy one of the locks they offer for sale, go buy your own
- If the latch that closes the door has 2 lock holes, then use 2 locks, it ain't no fun to show up to find somebody else added a lock to your unit, and now you are locked out of your own space
- If you fail to follow the above advise, be sure you own a big asss set of bolt cutters, and yes, there is a story there...
- Best places have some electricity you can tap into, even if there is only one bulb, you can get the thing that screws into the socket that will take both a bulb and an electric cord in case you want to run an extra light or a tool of some kind

All depends on location. A friend owns a large storage place in central IL and charges $30 a month for a one car space. The self storage place down the street from me charges $300 a month.
