I think you're going to feel very out of place with either of these cars in japan now... you might even get some negative attention because of them.

That being said I'd take the R34 if I had to choose.

I live in Japan now.

I assume that you will be modding your car...NSX or R34 whichever you decide to get.

Now before you spend $ on the parts and modding...You might want to research about importing cars into USA.

That would be your #1 question because that will decide which car to buy in Japan.

I wouldnt spend all that $$$ and find out that you cant or it isnt worth importing your car to USA.

Why would I feel out of place? A more interesting to me is, why would I get negative attention for being in either car. are they Yakuza cars now? haha

I don't think I gave living in Japan enough consideration

So to *append* my previous post, if you're going to be there for a decent amount of time, and you can buy and get back out of a GT-R (I don't think importing it would be easy or cost effective), then you should go for it!

If you don't mind me asking, are you going there in the private sector, or is it civil/military? I had a good friend whose sister moved there for just a year to teach English and she never came back!

I'm going there as military, but with OTEP I could stay indefinitely. I'm planning on 2 tours, or 6 years at this point. long enough that I feel it would be worth it to get into one of the two cars, even I never bring either back. As for those asking about seeing which is harder to import, the answer is neither, you can import any car you want if you don't plan on having it registered for street use. (I have two friends in particular that have done it). I figure that initial 6 years will be enough street use and whatever I wind up with will just turn into my track monster when I return.

as much as i like the NSX, the r34 seems more practical there and will be more rare when you bring it back. I still find it hard though since I feel like the NSX is such a more exotic feeling car.

I would pick R35 GT-R over NSX, but NSX over R34 Skyline GTR.

Dang tough question. I have always been a fan of the R34 GTR but the NSX has that timeless exotic look that just can't be forgotten about.

I'd have to go with the R34 because I can always dream about owning one, but never will. Also, I've never seen one on the street or anywhere besides a show room in my life and probably never will.

You can afford these kinds of cars through the militar?! I have seen several instances of this with people who are stationed overseas and are driving $40k+ vehicles...!!!

I believe it's because Japan has moved past the street-racer/track-racer/tuner fad.

It's not nearly as popular as it was in the 1990s and early 2000s. But I think a big factor is that it's not PC to have a sports car in japan now.

Basically, for a variety of reasons, it's not cool to drive sports cars in Japan in this moment in time.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
