Tesla acceleration
But where are the sounds?
One time about 15 years ago I was working outside in the hot Texas summer. It was easily 105 out, and I was moving in and out of cars on a dealership's lot. Every car door I opened felt like I was pulling open the door to an oven by the way the heat wave would just blast me in the face. After a few hours of this, I was incredibly thirsty, so I went into the dealership and bought what I thought was going to be a bottle of water from a vending machine. Instead, what came out was a CAN of water. It was literally a soda can but with water bottle graphics on the outside and water inside. I sat there in the lobby of this dealership drinking my water from a can, but every sip triggered a horrified reaction. I would get lost in thought, instinctively take a drink, and then be slapped back into reality as my subconscious struggled to reconcile the flavor in my mouth with its expectations. My brain simply could not comprehend the flavor of water coming from a can.
That's kind of how I feel about the way this car accelerates. I'm sure that 0-60 in 3 seconds in a Tesla is just as great as 0-60 in 3 seconds in any car, but it's just weird that there are no noises or drama. I don't know that my fragile little mind can handle the change.

I do that with my wife's Rav4EV (tamed down Tesla in Toyota clothing), except only 1/2 the fun.
I guess one could get an MP4 player with say an old triple carb Ferrari V12 exhaust note. Which somehow is sync'ed with the "throttle" control. Bluetooth'ed to the sound system.
That would be kinda cool mod.

I had an opportunity to be a passenger in a Tesla Model S p85D tonight. It beautifully executed interior, comfortable seats, an overall aesthetic to rival european luxury cars.
But the acceleration at full chat from the 690 hp electric motors left me positively stunned. I was going to join the circus and be the human cannonball for the sheer thrill...but i'm afraid that would be too slow in comparison to the crust warping thrust the Model S provides. If I owned one, i'd go hunting exotics to eat for breakfast.
what a car!

They are quick, not fast. If you see the quarter mile times you see slower trap speeds then other cars.
I say quick because to be fast means more then 0-60.
These cars are grossly over priced. Six figures for an electric car! Insane. I haven't seen One track day where these electric boats make it out for any hot laps. I notice no car mag puts down a track time either. Only source I recall is top gear whom couldn't run the car pushed that hard for so long. I only assume it's still the same.
Instant TQ is a thrill but it gets old. Not one time have I had to stress about range in an electric car. Cause my gas car fills for $60 in about 5 min.
As for pumping in motor noises. All of that is poser behavior. There is no replacement for the roar of a v8 or the exhaust burble of a fast down shift. Reminds me of people who put Acura badges on Honda products or "turbo" badging on NA cars. Heck why not add a few fake mufflers on a tesla and hook up speakers inside.

Road and Track's July 2015 issue reviewed the P85D on a snow cross course. Funny thing, the author called Tesla to have the electronic nannies turned off- which they wouldn't do for him. The author said he was pulling fuses out to try and manually turn them off. There is no button to turn off the controls. And apparently, the engineer at Tesla said "Musk doesn't like turning stability control off" when he called to ask them to do it remotely.
so, not a track car.
