Default thinking of getting a gen1 miata...

anyone know much about these cars?? are there any trouble areas i should look for when shopping for one?? is it worth paying more for a 1.8L vs. the 1.6L?? how reliable are these cars compared with similar year hondas?? also, anyone know of a good miata forum?? my other option is a gen2 mr2, but those cars are pricey compared with the miata...

1.6 cars are fine.
the days of 1000-1500 decent cars are gone.
Spec Miata has done that.
they are good cars, robust, and last well.
Fun track cars.
Good luck.

The Miata is a very reliable car, the www.miata.net forums is a great place for info.

In addition, they have an excellent "buying" list: http://www.miata.net/faq/usedmx5.html

Definitely study the list Shinigami posted and search on search on Miata.net for any other questions you might have, there's a very good chance it has been asked already and could save you some time.

As for the 1.6 vs 1.8 engine. I prefer the torquier more powerful pull of the 1.8L, while many other prefer the revvier nature of the 1.6L. They are both sturdy and see 200k+ regularly.

There's a reason that if you go to any given track day/autox, the majority of cars you see will be Miata's. They are cheap, easy to work on, and fun to drive.

If you are going to go spec miata racing then I would say 1.6 is as good as 1.8. Otherwise - 1.8L is the better choice. plus it will be newer. Either way you can't go wrong.

Regarding getting a first generation (labelled the NA version), a lot of people mention that the best one is a 93 using the 115hp 1.6 liter engine. Might wanna look into it.

I heard the 1994 is the best model.

Still has the light rims, WORKING real time oil pressure gauge, 1.8L and newer A/C system, before the 1995 weight add ons.
