Thinking of Getting a VW VR6 and Doing This To It...
Now that the 24v VR6 is finally here, I've been thinking of getting one and doing this to it... your thoughts? Oh yeah... those are 19" BBS LMs

I wouldn't, GTI is up for a very soon complete makeover. If u really want this car, wait and see how u like the new one. I think it won't be more than 6 months, also if you wait u most likely will be able to get the older model cheaper if u like it more.
also, from what i've read over at vwvortex, most gti owner who have driven this GLI (24V VR6) say the car handles much worse then the 1.8T. the car is heavier and the larger engine unbalanced the chassis. the 1.8T is also much easier to mod. and an update is definately due for the golf, so at least give it a few months.
I have seen kits for the VR6 that will get about 25 hp from the basic mods (ECU, exhaust, airflow), but if you are going to fix it up I would definately go with the 1.8, for $1600 you can get up to 230-240 easy.
I owned a VR6 Corrado. VW's are awesome cars. It was very fun to drive, but it is true, the heavy VR6 in front of the wheels really creates an understeer problem. I personally think the 1.8T is not a very good engine, despite the hp you can squeeze from it, and would definitely go 24V VR6 GTI if you are in the market.
However, I would buy a Mini Cooper S before the GTI by a long shot.

The GTI isn't up for a makeover for another two model years. I believe the 2005 will have a new look.
I have the 1.8T and if I had to do it again, I would buy the VR6. Sure, you could throw a chip in the 1.8T and get a nice HP return for the dollar, but then you have the possibility of running into surging problems and/or voiding your warranty.
The drive by wire system in the 1.8T is total crap. Try and blip the throttle for a downshift. There is no throttle response. Try moving from a light with the AC running. The turbo lag is obscene. A chip will resolve some of these issues, but see comments above concerning warranty.
When I bought the car, I though I might put some money into mods. Then I realized that it is a 20k car and spending 10% of the value of the car on mods is kind of silly.
I had to sell my S2K when the economy took a dump. I see the GTI as a transition car until things pick back up. For the mods I am planning; intake, exhaust, suspension, my money would have been better spent on a VR6 for its out-of-the-box drivability.
